Hello, i have a system with an AMD Sempron 3000+ CPU, 1 gb ram, 64 gb sata ssd(ide to sata adapter) and an 80 gb ide hdd.
The system has an AMD radeon HD 3650 gpu, which is a little too new, but i tried to install drivers for windows 2000 for the gpu and it worked just fine. (i would like to downgrade the gpu so i can run the system with windows 98, but every single windows 98 compatible gpu in europe is pretty expensive for my budget and the only other gpu i have is an mgi g55+mdha32db, which i cant find drivers for online.)
I heard that the CPU my system has is pretty weak/bad, i was planning to upgrade to a better CPU in the future, the motherboard is an msi k8mm3-v if that helps.

If i install windows 2000 on the system, i will install the extended kernel for it

Anyways, I want to use the machine for some old games (doom II, quake 3d arena, half life 1, stepmania 3.9, gta san adreas and such), applications made for old versions of windows and other old stuff, wifi access would be nice too (sometimes, not planning to actually use this machine for web browsing.)

XP. I loved 2000 back in the day, but 2000 didn't have the best game support, and I'm sure every game that runs on 2000 will run fine on XP...

Is this a socket 754 build?

yes

Ah, sorry, didn't see the motherboard reference in your original post. FWIW, I'm also trying to set up a K8M800-based board for 98SE and... let's just say it hasn't been smooth sailing, so if you're going to make another try at that, I wish you luck.

I'd go with WinXP - there is some benefit to running things in compatibility mode when games older than year 2000 appear

I'm sure i played HL1, Q3d and definitely GTA3/VC/SA on XP

to be honest i'd play Doom on zdoom but i'd guess the CPU is fine with many dos games under DOSBOX too

for the game era you seem to be looking at the CPU is more than enough if it turns out that upgrading isnt possible
