Hi everyone,

I'm working on this IBM with a little bit of a history behind it. From what I've been told, this computer used to post, but after having its internal battery "replaced", it no longer did anything. Absolutely nothing. No flicker, no lights, no nothing. Absolutely dead. It seems likely to me that this is the power supply, although I really don't know if they are connected. If it was put in backwards, would that even have an effect here? Wouldn't it still at least power on? I don't know.

I removed the supply, and after drilling out the rivets to the case, I was inside. I tested the fuse and switch, and they seemed to be in good shape. Darn. Even outside the computer, I flick the switch and nothing happens. Not even a twitch of fan spin. I'm no repair expert when it comes to this sort of thing.

And so I'm stuck. I'm not sure if this is correct behavior for the power supply, I am quite unfamiliar with this model.

I have attached some photos to the post that should show what I'm working with here. I did notice two resistors in the center that seem to have gotten hot at some point.

I would like to ask if anyone has some things to check or look for with regards to repairing this unit. I could also try to replace the inside of the unit with something modern, but ideally it would be best to keep it stock. Plus, I am missing a pinout or wiring diagram for it. I know that the plasma screens these use might be non standard voltages. I know capacitors from this era can go bad as well, but I'd like to get a second opinion before pulling the trigger on all new caps.

If anyone has any input, it would be appreciated.

Thank you for reading my post.

Ryan

Hi everyone. I was able to repair this power supply.

First thing I tried was a recap, no luck

I replaced the STR chip and mosfet, no luck.

I noticed there was a thermal fuse that had a built in resistor (white package). I replaced that with a resistor (yes frowned upon, I know), and it worked.

Nice ! Guessing: Probably the old caps caused it to blow due to excess current. Good thing you replaced them first 😀

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun
