Hello
I have seversl prop.3d card such pcx1, ati rage, s3 virge, matrox impression+, rendition v2200, matrox mystiq.
Which Dos game or program is the best for testing most of them? I have gd5464 laguna 3d too.
I find tomb raider has many versions, pcx1, pcx2, s3d, ati rage, matrox myst, 3dfx, rendition
I have one pc with s3 virge, 3dfx voodoo with cd drive.
This pc working good both s3d and 3dfx patched version. ( i download patches from https://tombraiders.hu/letoltesek/category/17-tr1-patchek )
I have a testbench without cd drive, but with fakecd ( https://www.math.uni-rostock.de/~nfa506/fakecddr.html )
Its working with Matrox mystiq, and ATI CIF, but with rendition v2200 pci got error message, attached, and with pcx1 a strange resolution with error message too (attached)
Is anyone who successfully run pcx1 and rendition version with these hardwares?
Thsnk you any advice!
Has it been confirmed that POD does anything meaningful with S3d?
I'm using a wrapper and seeing that all it's sending to S3d are the handful of untextured triangles for car shadows, the rest is rendered in software. PODS3DX.EXE and WPODS3D.EXE both do it, and both depend on the S3d DLL.
I guess it's something that you get alpha-blended shadows (I'm assuming they're blended anyway) vs. the software renderer's stipple, but a bit of a stretch.

There's a video by @vetz where he compares a bunch of proprietary APIs that POD supports.
Needs more detail to be able to tell. If S3d mode in the game is 99% software rendering with a few hardware polygons on top then maybe all the ViRGE ever renders in the game are flat car shadows. But maybe there were other hardware touches like that added, or maybe these couple of hardware polygons offloaded just enough processing time to allow the developers to add a bit more of something to the software rendering etc. These would be small details that you'd only notice if you've played the game enough. In any case if all S3d adds are a couple of shadow polygons overlaid on the software rendered image then it's debatable whether the game supports S3d as such. It both does and doesn't.
i have some pod s3d videos somewhere i can try to find and upload if its can help.
or you can do experiements inside of PCEm and 86box, as they emulate s3 virge compatible video cards , includeing API at low level. Should have very good accuracy, almost like OG hardware.
Here's a clear one. Everything S3d renders is shown in purple, the rest is CPU: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHigYglY10o.
A couple of polygons in other words, all black with an alpha of 128 and no texture. A good guess would be that whatever the software renderer would stipple for alpha is rendered through S3d for alpha blending.
What's the confirmation for S3's ViRGE driver for GLQuake using anything proprietary? Its readme talks about it making "extensive" use of DX retained mode, and I don't see any S3d TK calls being made.
Quake
not related to S3D API, this is just optimized direct3d minigl (opengl32->d3d5?) wrapper. this not deal anything about Proprietary S3 Virge API

minigl tranlsates opengl to glide not direct3d. I was needed as early Voodoos lacked a proper opengl ICD, which latter ones got.

minigl is mini(mal) (open)gl realization for Quake1(2) based games))) There are minigl dll's for 3dfx, powervr and other accellerators)))))
Need help? Begin with photo and model of your hardware 😉

Sorry, but what is going on with all the parentheses? 😮
Has anyone opinion which prop. graphic card with which software posdible to test functionality?
For example the s3 virge can try with tomb raider s3d version.
Im looking for benchmark app too for early dx cards before 6. For DX6 cards i know 3dmark99, and final reality.
Driverpack will be good too.

Which 2D card are you using for PowerVR? Unlike for 3DFX, it matters. Both for speed and compatibility.
Hello
I tried with rendition v2200 pci, ark 2000, s3, gd5464
used along with Nvidia TNT and its perfect framerate

According to vetz and Putas tests with PowerVR Midas3, Rendition Verite cards give the best compatibility. Furthermore with Tomb Raider PowerSGL patch (both PCX1 and PCX2) there are resolutions which are only available if Rendition Verite is present as a 2D card (although there is rare lagging in the most popular/playable 640x480).
In DOS the Tomb Raider PowerSGL patch (both PCX1 and PCX2) in 640x480 resolution I have found the Cirrus Logic CL-GD5436 as the most compatible (3rd column from the right here).
Although with OpenGL (GLQuake) Putas experienced 20% scores drop with Verite 2x00 and Trident Blade 3D and used Virge GX2 instead.
Played moonracer powervr+rendition v2100
And it lagging.
Not tried v2200, but I doubt it helps.
But TNT + powervr here gives best performance hmm
