Hi. I got a "good" deal (by that I mean cheaper than current ebay prices) on a GUS Classic last week and the card should arrive tomorrow.

But driver installation seems a little confusing.
I get that this card is mostly used for DOS games and applications. But my goal here is to get it running alongside my ESS 1868f based soundcard. Preferably all on Win98SE.

Since I mainly launch my DOS games from within Windows, will they recognize the GUS when used with the Windows driver? Or do I need to install the DOS drivers on top of that?
Also I read that the Windows driver are finnicky and there has to be no other soundcard installed beforehand, which is not the case here.

So what's the best process here? I'm asking before I have to reinstall Windows three times.

Do yourself a favour and install a 2nd HDD with DOS 6.22 on it and use that for GUS

Yeah maybe that's for the best.

Hardware profiles should work.
Hardly anyone ever used them, but afik they worked ok

Of course, you have to reboot between profiles, but that's no difference to anything else

So I got the card and tried to get it working for the last two days. I skipped Windows all together and installed the DOS drivers. Card detected, 1mb of RAM detected, all setup tests passed, no IRQ/DMA conflicts/ errors/freezes whatsoever.

The only problem: I can't get any sound out of it!
That's when I noticed the card has of it's LM317 voltage regulators missing. Really strange, I lookes around google and all other GUS seem to have them. I don't know if the card just didn't come with them or if they were intentionally removed.

have you checked the software mixer settings?

Post a nice clear photo of the board if you can.

Yes, I checked the mixer settings and every value was set to 0. But according to the -h command all values can be set from -56 (I think it was) to 0 so I assumed that wasn't the issue.

Here is the card.

Some components are missing: U17 and U19 - two LM317 voltage regulators it seems.
And below the GAL IC R13 and and C107 are unpopulated. I already ordered the 317s but I don't know the values for the resistor and the cap.

What about U17 and U19? Are they necessary for getting sound from the line-out?

Ok, thanks for the answers. Like I said I ordered them already, should be here later this week.
I'll let you know if it worked.

By the looks of it the IC were cut off from the board as there are still small remains of the legs visible. Weird.

I bought an original GUS new in November of 1992. I used it for two years in my 386/33 with MS-DOS 5.0 and Win3.1. Then, I moved it into my 486DX2/80 and used it with MS-DOS 6.22 and Win3.11 until 1997.
When I finally built a Pentium 200MMX system with Win95 in 1997, I attempted to use the GUS but could never get it to work right. I had to finally give up my GUS and replaced it with an AWE64 Gold.

So, my experience is also that the classic GUS is happiest in DOS & Win3.1

Update: The card works!!
Adding the two LM317T ICs did the trick.

Thanks for the help everybody! 😁

As some of you recommended I will only be using the Gravis in DOS mode. The Ultrasound drivers for Windows immediately shot my Win98 install.
But in DOS, everything works.

This is why I remain with Windows 95 OSR 2.5 with my GUS.

IMHO, there isn't really anything Windows based worth running on a GUS classic.

I have a Windows 98 SE install with no Windows GUS drivers installed. I only have the DOS utilities/software installed and those work fine under Windows 98 SE's DOS 7.1. I have had no compatibility issues with games.

I got the GUS running in Win98 alongside my Terratec Gold 96/16 1868f. Here is what I did:

- fresh install of Windows 98 with no soundcard present
- installed chipset and GPU
- plugged in the GUS
- installed the 4.11 drivers in DOS. When the installer asked to "update the Windows folder" I hit yes. (even though I assume this is meant for the likes of Win 3.1)
- installed the regular Windows 95 driver on top

I don't know if the "update Windows folder" step from the DOS installer was necessary since the card wasn't working quite right after that. I tested Jazz Jackrabbit and got some sound effects but no music. So I just installed the Win95 driver after that.

Now I have sound in Windows and DOS games lauched from within Windows.

Then I plugged in my Terratec card and installed the drivers. Also worked. Lastly I connected the Line-Out of the Terratec to the Line-in of the GUS so I don't have to switch back and forth.
And now it works exactly how I wanted it to work from the beginning. 😁
