Can anybody spot the difference?
I can't.
Can you hear the difference nukeykt posted of Aladdin between Fast and Nuked??
YMF718 is a good comparison? Why not recording YM3812 or YMF262 in DOS/Windows? 😀

Agreed, real AdLib and SB Pro v2 only! 😀

Why, YES.

By all means go ahead.
I hear difference in "arrock1"
Piano-like synth (0:31 - 0:51) sounds much brighter and louder on YMF718 compared to all four OPL-emulation cores.
Does not look like the 3d effect the only reason of this.
Interesting to listen YM3812 or YMF262.
How do I play the midi with the OPL chip on my YMF-744? When I play it the XG synthesis is used.
Win 11 - Intel i7-1360p - 32 GB - Intel Iris Xe - Cubilux 7.1 USB
Falscosoft Midi Player supports windows 9x and on, and it's the best and most feature packed midi player I know of. Falcosoft Soundfont Midi Player + Munt VSTi + BassMidi VSTi
You can select the midi output to Soft, FM, MPU-401, Soundfonts, etc. right from the midi player options (select FM).
Please disable any 3D effects from Control Panel or Volume Control in Windows 9x before recording and Bass/Treble should be set to 0 on the YMF71x for flat and accurate recording.

Can you hear the difference between the four excluding the terrible YMF718 recording?
The 3D effect might make some instruments louder/fuller than others and it completely destroys the stereo image, you can disregard the ymf718 recordings posted by nukeykt.
The 3D effect that the YMF718 applies is so bad the recordings of the ymf718 nukeykt posted should NOT be reference to anything at all.
nukeykt, please re-record your example WITHOUT the 3D effect because this is terribly misleading.
Interesting to listen YM3812 or YMF262.
I'd like it too, but nobody seems up for the task.
Just recorded samples from YMF262 OPL3:
First, thank you very much for the YMF262 tracks.
It is obvious that NukedOPL is the most accurate of the bunch, it is spot on the YMF262.
For ymf718 i used windows media player and yamaha's sound card drivers installed in windows 98se.
For emulators i used windows media player and opl3 user mode driver in windows 10.
For ymf262 i used same user mode driver and sweet midi player in windows 10.
Also note that Windows 98 has two opl3 drivers: one for sound blaster cards and second is generic driver. They slightly differ: Volume calculation table differ, generic fm driver doesn't support MIDI sustain and seems has bug where one note doesn't play in lava3.mid from gubble 2. Ymf718 uses generic driver, while my user mode driver replicates sb16 driver.

But, it is not a real YMF262?
To record my YMF719E I used a midi output called "OPL3-SA FM MIDI" which I think is part of the Yamaha YMF driver for windows98SE.

I built Arduino based OPL3 rig and modified user mode driver to send OPL commands to Arduino.
This how i recorded it:
Sweet MIDI Player->User Mode OPL3 driver->Arduino->Yamaha YMF262-M(OPL3)->Yamaha YAC512M(DAC)->Line in->Audacity->MP3.
Now i'll record samples using original drivers running in modified DOSBox-X and OPL3 rig.
Here's samples:
They sound the same to my ear.

I still don't understand why the YMF719 sounds different to all others starting from second 18 on the lion track, It uses the exact same YMF289 chip like the YMF718?
That particular instrument sounds mellower and less modulated on the 719 than on the 718 or any other OPL you posted.
Your older sample seems good to me. But newer is strange.
It's the exact same file reposted.
Can you please record again the YMF718 without the 3D effect?
I think this is bug related to Tremolo generator. I got similar problem with CMI8738's FM synth, which seems is perfect OPL3 clone. Try to reboot your pc.
Sorry. But i still can't find option which disables 3D.
