Hi all
Just after some advice on replacing capacitors on these graphics cards , I have a GF 6600GT an FX5500 and an Ati 9550 , I know they're not worth anything really but I wanted to get some practice soldering on these as I have a couple of old motherboards need caps replacing and would rather use these for practice than the motherboards.
I have a decent soldering station and everything else I need to do the soldering and have plenty of experience soldering wiring etc on vehicles, the orientation and reading the uf and volts on the std electrolytic caps is no problem but what about the surface mounted aluminium ones , I'm not 100% on the markings and what I should be buying for them.
The 9550 has a clearly busted cap next to the heatsink but boots fine into windows but has artifacts on screen the whole time.
The FX5500 looks like it has a missing SMD (photo) but I don't know what to replace it with ? This one doesn't show a screen at all and doesn't boot. (I tested it before I realised it had a tiny missing cap)
The 6600GT has bulging caps , boots fine and goes into windows fine , plays 3d apps ok but with artifacts.
If anyone could help with what the tiny cap missing is off the FX5500 that would be great and whether you think that might be the problem with it not booting ?
Sorry for sounding like a noob but I kind of really am when it comes to this tiny soldering , should be some fun trying to get them to work though , I've even resorted to watching some you tube tutorials and practising soldering and desoldering on some old circuit boards, maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks ? hah
Thanks in advance
