Hi,

here's a prototype of the CHiLL MIDI module : this is based on CHiLL interface PCB, and a 3d printed 'dual color' enclosure.
Maybe I will also make a larger version that can house XR385 / DB50XG cards.
Send me a PM if you are interested in this. 😀

Agreed; nicely done! For my tastes, a more subdued colour scheme would be better. If you are still offering these by then, I may pick one up when my budget allows (it won't be soon).

New revision of the 'Medium size' CHiLL Enclosure.
It took over all improvements from CHiLL XL Enclosure.
My new prototype is in red/black color scheme

Any requests for other color schemes ?

The large CHILLBOX XL now has a little brother... Well let's call this one CHILLBOX M...
It replaces the old CHiLL Box at https://www.serdashop.com/CHiLLBox , there are various changes, the box is slightly larger and now features
the MIDI logo instead of the 'CHiLL' text.
The prints arrived. Red/Black color combo (as there were no suggestions for other color schemes...).

i have a x2gs and the phil/chil adapter and works fine as designed. I also have a coupe midi/gamepad cables where the midi in/out comes out on the 5 pin din connectors.
What im wondering is if I make a reverse adapter from 5 pin din to gameport and still use the phil/chil adapter. Or will this have problems that the chill enclosure would address?
I think i just need power and uart out and I think the DIN connector supplies that.

I'm not sure if i understand your question correctly
maybe this splitter could be of help ? https://www.serdashop.com/DB15-Doubler-Solder-Kit

The DIN connector doesn't have power. If you want to connect the phil/chill adapter to a gameport, you can just use a 15-pin extension cable instead of the MIDI breakout cable, and call it a day. If you want to connect a joystick at the same time, use the db15 doubler linked by dreamblaster.

That would work and has the right idea, but im hoping i can use the cable for easy access. I have two midi cables so if it worked i could potentially switch the x2gs from either machine easily.
The cables i have already do the split so it has the 15 pin gamport connection and the two 5 pin bin connectors.

I want to connect the midi out (DIN connection) to a female gameport which would then be attached to the chill/phil adapter.

Im not certain but it seems pin 4 of the midi out DIN connector is pulled up to 5 V. (but might be current limited so not enough to power the connected wavetable?)

I think this depends on your sound card providing 5v power to the designated pin on the MIDI connector, which I'm not seeing as an option via a standard joystick port based on published pinouts. I think you are going to have to purchase the gameport to MIDI adapter, connect it to your sound card and start checking pins with a multimeter to confirm this as I expect it's both dependent on how the DB15-MIDI cable is wired and the way the sound card implemented it's MIDI interface.

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_port : You get to have +5V (usually unfused!) on pins 1, 8 and 9 (traditional pre-midi game ports also have +5V on pin 15).

The typical gameport-to-MIDI cable schematics on the internet (see e.g. ebay cable, help! DB15 Gameport > MIDI with joystick pass through) have a resistor between +5V at the game port and pin 4 of MIDI out. This is the safest design, because it has one resistor between +5V and pin 4, and a second resistor between pin 5 and the inverter/amplifier. This makes both pins short-circuit proof. The cable would work as well (as long as no short circuits are present) with just one resistor on either line (which should be 470 ohms instead of 2*220 Ohm), so there is no necessity to have a resistor between +5V and pin 4.

If the 220 ohm resistor is there, that pin is useless for powering the Chill and Phil adapter.

The cable already splits. That's the problem for your use case. The unfused unlimited 5V supply is only on the joystick connector, and the MIDI data is only on the MIDI out connector. The Chill/Phil needs both the raw 5V supply and the MIDI data. That's why I suggested to ditch your MIDI splitter cables, and just use a simple gameport extensionlike https://www.amazon.de/dp/B005UABIC4 to connect the Chill/Phil to your computers (or two of those cables, so you don't have to swap the cables at the computer). In case you want the +5V connected to the Chill/Phil and a joystick, you need a DB-15 splitter, so you get +5V to both sides.

Question: I recently acquired a Yamaha DB50XG board, and I wish to use it as an external MIDI module. I need the XL edition of the CHiLL box for that, right? The M won't fit?

UPDATE: Ah, this other thread answers my question, and the answer is "yes". I should have searched better first, before asking this here. Thanks!

yes you'd need XL Chill Box for DB50XG
