Do you own a I/O Magic Tempo card? Can you make some pictures?

Actually I have same issue as you had with Wavjammer card, I could get only Adlib music/sound in games (Prince of Persia, Dune 2, Lotus 3 ultimate challange), but no direct support of Magic Tempo (digital sound) in any game or with any laptop I tried 🙁

Card even successfully fully pass self test with testing program, but no more progress after that. Any game I tried freeze or can't see this card (I tried change IRQ 11 to 5,3,7 and used swapirq, with NOEMS, or without EMM386).

For me this card is like joke, that why no any information about it in internet (like videos, reviews etc.). Anyway i didn't expect much from this card.

As a plus of this card, it is the only one pcmcia card with which my laptop AST Advantage Explorer 486SX turns on, but I cannot start the setup.exe in Windows 3.11, it writes that there is not enough memory.

Box contain manual, Card Services disk, Drivers disk and Voyetra software. As I know, maximum Windows version compatible with this card is Windows 95a.

Cool stuff. Thank you for the pics!
If I read the box correctly, the MIDI port does not work in DOS. Is it the case? And it also features a genuine Yamaha OPL chip?
There are some drivers for this card floating around, but it would not harm if you could dump all the disks that came with it.

Did any of the games you try claim to have direct support for it?
There is a midpak driver in tmpotest.zip from the official website.

I've put together this chart with all information about all known PCMCIA (16 bit) sound cards and game port cards.

Bondi, thank you for chart creation, feel free to add "Media Tempo" Chipset as OPL3, cause manual saying it is compatible with YM3812, windows config icon showing OPL3, so supposed to be OPL3.

And that "~20 games" on Mobygames is fake, due I already found much more than that amount (from games setup choice), but still can't use any, due dos4gw protection errors.

That's intersting that there are more games with native support. Which are the additional ones compared to mobygames? Can you list them?
Would be also cool to have the manual and disks copies. The included software is $300 worth, after all 😁

Many of the games that use the HMI drivers should support it (and the Wavjammer also), in doubt check the content of the hmidet.386 file.
Not sure about digpak games, see my post above with a link to the midpak/digpak sources from IO Magic website.

Found another card (or two). Not sure if it's something new or some kind of a clone. Almost no information about this card.
It's a Noteworthy Audio PC Card NWAUD01
Looks like it was used in Toshiba Satellite 105CS notebooks.
Noteworthy Audio.png

Another one is NOTEWORTHY SCSI/AUDIO PC CARD PCMCIA NWCOMBO2, manufacturer is Toshiba. It's mentioned on cnet.com
https://www.cnet.com/products/noteworthy-scsi … pc-card-pcmcia/
Bot there is no information about it at all.

Unfortunately сould not find the old site of the Noteworthy company.

To complete my ealier post, Noteworthy cards appear to be clones of New Media cards. NWAUD01 is the clone of Wavjammer and NWCOMBO2 is Toast'n'Jam Sound SCSI card.
Here is the file list of NWCOMBO2 drivers http://www.storagedrivers.com/drivers/51/51784.htm and it matches the NM TNJ Sound/SCSI card drivers. NWAUD01 is type 1 card which also coincides with Wavjammer.

So, I got a hold of a PCMCIA Fujitsu Stereo sound card..... BUT, it's missing the dongle

Can any of my fellow vogons' colleagues suggest a way to rebuild the dongle or is it just a fool's errand.

It's a shame since these cards are so rare and so in demand.!

It should not be difficult to build a dongle for Fujitsu card. It uses a standard Hirose (HRS) 15 pin connector. The part numbers that you need are NX30TA-15PAA and NX-15T-CV Not sure they are still available, though. Mouser and Digikey used to have them.
You can check my thread about similar connector, but 25 pin Pinout of IBM 3D PCMCIA Sound card audio cable
Or you can try to find a ready made cable from some other device and adapt it, they are not uncommon. Yahoo auctions is your best choice for that.
As for the piout, I have this cable and can figure it out and post here on coming days.

Thank you for the help. It would be good to repair/salvage such a card as they are getting fairly rare and would be the ideal solution for 16 bit pcmcia sound.

Here is an example, this cable has the same 15 pin connector, and most probably can be adapted to be used with your card. The only concern is whether all necessary lines are connected. I assume 11 out of 15 are connected, pretty good chances.

BTW the MPEG card can be used without the dongle, it can output to a laptop LCD.

Thanks for the reply. I threw the seller a message to see if they will ship to Canada.

I tested the card in a slot and it powers up/shows up in windows as an ESS audio chip (no drivers). I haven't done anything more than that.

Do you think I can just use a networking dongle (those seem easier to come by) and see if the lines work? I presume you are suggesting I cut the distal connector and run a multimeter to the pinouts?

Any dongle will do as long as it has same 15 pin HRS connector and the necessary pins connected. I'll try to post the pinout today.
Basically, yes, you need to either cut the other end off or disassemble it, if possible, and connect a female audio jack instead.

Both Panasonic cards have a special option I haven't seen anywhere else, it can output the FM( DOS) or FM+DA (Win9x) generated by the card using the PC speaker, yes you read that correctly!

Yeah, I wondered why more cards didn't do this - there's a data line in the PC Card spec that is intended for modems to be able to put their sound through to the PC speaker in the laptop. Using it looked a little complicated as it's a digital signal.

From INSIDE PC CARD CardBus and PCMCIA Design:

SPKR#: Binary Audio
SPKR# is an I/O-Memory mode signal added in release 2.0. It is used primarily to provide a binary audio tone for fax/modems. Compatibility Note: 16-bit PC Card has made this signal optional. But fax/modem cards are one of the most popular in 16-bit PC Card. For users of fax/modems, this signal provides feedback about connection activities. It is recommended that hosts support this signal.

Hmmmm now I'm getting ideas about how to make a parallel port Covox style dongle that plugs into an otherwise unwanted PCMCIA modem card, just to feed Covox noise through to the internal speaker... could be quite compact.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Thanks for the tip as I ended up buying the one off the Canadian seller. It's a gamble but it SHOULD work. If not, it will be a sacrifice in the name of retro science.

Thank you for the amazing tips. I bought the Margi DVD-to-GO PCMCIA adapter that came with a multimedia (4 port rca + 1 s-video output cable) as a gamble.

It arrived and after some initial difficulties getting pcmcia recognized in dos on a Compaq LTE 4/50cx; I managed to get it working.

NO MODIFICATIONS REQUIRED.

I happen to have a 2x rca male to 3.5 mm audio cable/adapter. I plugged it into the RCA video and Left audio ports on the Margi adapter and the other end into a speaker and it's working perfectly. I'm listening to SB/adlib audio right this moment.

A million thanks and I'm just adding to the knowledge base that this works => for Fujitsu 16 bit ESS Sound card missing the proprietary cable.

I have included the pictures of the parts I used.

Now the only question is there any use for hte Margi DVD-to-GO pcmcia card; I can't imagine watching / playing dvd's anymore I'm afraid on these older laptops.

** 1 wierd thing, plugging the rca cable into ANY of the rca ports (video, R, L, mic in) will all result in audio output so I'm sure the internal wiring is actually different; no matter, it's working perfectly.

Oh great, I'm glad it's working! And it's really a good luck it did not require any modifications.
As for working on any RCA ports, maybe they all have same ground line, which is connected to sound card's line L or R output. While the other contact is by coincidence connected to ground. It would work as you describe in this case.
Still, there is a risk to short something and damage the card. So I'd analyze what exactly goes on there.

Now the only question is there any use for hte Margi DVD-to-GO pcmcia card; I can't imagine watching / playing dvd's anymore I'm afraid on these older laptops.

I can't think of any other use for this card except for watching DVDs. But making it actually work on the laptop screen is a separate challenge, which can be fun. If you like this type of "fun" (:
It gave me a lot of headache at the time.

I have a Compaq LTE Elite 4/50cx Laptop ( ) and I got it working with an Eigerlab/Fujitsu 16 bit stereo sound card. I'm using the pcmcia drivers that come with the Compaq Softpaq drivers (sp1250).

The fujitsu/eigermedia drivers install fine and FM audio is working with basic installation.

Windows Sound system works (in windows 3.1); haven't tested SB compatibility in Windows.

SB support in dos is non-existent. When I try to to use esscfg.exe utility to select a different irq; it shows a IRQ conflict even though I have used a harware info tool (manifest from QEMM) to check that the IRQ is free. I think this is likely due to the lack of DMA support in dos.

I didn't realize this was an issue until I came back and (re-read) the 24 pages of comments and found that most PCMCIA audio cards do not support DMA/sound blaster in dos. I spent many an hour trying to fix the IRQ error but now realize it's not important in dos and the error may have something to do with the DMA not being supported in dos.

Dune2 adlib audio works fine.

Futurecrew demos (unreal/second reality) do not work in dos

I have not tested SB pro in windows as I'm interested mainly in dos gaming. Once you get into windows gaming (win95+); I have a pentium class machine with better audio/faster for those windows 95/98 compatible games).

Thanks to Bondi for the help in getting a compatible dongle cable for the Fujitsu 16 bit stereo sound card (pcmcia) - documented above
