I think I'll let this board sleep for a while, I have others more interesting to play with. I have a nefarious plan for that 486 board I've been playing with in the past couple of weeks for instance. 😀

I/O, I/O,
It's off to disk I go,
With a bit and a byte
And a read and a write,
I/O, I/O

darn, was hoping you might play around with the clock gen idea in the other thread some more.

I'm still going to experiment with that in the following days, but this particular board is too fussy for me - for now.

today I looked into the possibility of converting a s1563s to a s1563d

it seems like the process will be mostly the same, though I'd like confirmation that the fets are the same. luckybob. can you post some high res shots?

reposting lucky bobs s1563Dual apic area pic to bring it to the same page

rest of pics are from a ebay listing for a s1564single

since I'm on the subject of related boards let's also talk about the s1562

images from google search
it seems like the s1562 may actually be the most interesting conversion possibly even in a good way....

I can see pads for possibly a pwm module that plugs in south of the cpu sockets. these may be able to accommodate some of the cool switching regulator projects people have been working on
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0NLGfocviU

next, the removable cache is also very attractive. find some 4ns 512k modules maybe?

the whole area around the cpu is pretty different though than the s1564 and s1563 so the resistor thing will have to be figured out again.

I also see a chip missing from the tag? ram area so may need that for 512mb cachable area maybe?

Today i converted an S1564 to dual. One thing i noticed is that i got an NMI-error during POST, it vanished after removing R276.
Besides that it was easy.

Good job 😀

I’ve been playing with my 256kb modded 2+570 in mine recently at 400mhz.

What socket did you use? AMP one from ebay?

What video card will you use in the build?

I assume you’re going for dual 233?

Years ago i ordered some AMP sockets from ebay. They seem exactly the same as the tyan ones, only difference is that the metal lever on the tyan is a bit shinier.
Recently i took a look around ebay and didn't find any sockets, do you know where to get some more spares as mine are now empty?

Videocard was some random ATI one.
CPUs 2x233MMX.

I didn't think about a special build yet, just got this board for my collection and maybe build some Windows 2000 machine around it some day.

My tyan mobos use a variety of sockets (from tyan) I do have one that is as you described similar to the amp one but shiny.

Yeah, I play with my free boards on foam pads more than I play with the one that’s in a case 🤣.

Fun little boards.

Btw, when you build, a pci radeon 7500 low profile seems to be the best video card I’ve found for it so far. Lemme know if you find a better one. Everything else seems to have some kind of issue.

Isn't R276 related to some ISA irq?

I also happen to have a ASUS PCI/I P54NP4, but this won't even boot to linux ... maybe something fishy.

Yes, it's a collectors-thing - you have one, you're happy! And on some sun-moon-constellations, you get it out of the box, put in on the table, push some cards and cpus in and install your OS the 5000th time just to play some hours with it and store it away afterwards.

BTW thanks for the link. Now i've lost another 100€ in parts, shipping and customs - but i need to have some of these parts in stock - having is better than needing! 😉

Re: Tyan S1564S to S1564D single to dual processor conversion

No prob 🤣 :p

The asus or the tyan won’t boot linux?

Btw, be sure to disable system bios cachable if you put in a k6-3+/2+

You understand my retro process 🤣.

Btw on my last conversion, I just robbed a socket from a busted board. If you have one, a rather violent encounter with a torch to the back and a stern comment to the task and you’ll have a new socket. (I used a cpu and sink to pull it loose)

Yeah, that's an option, but "unfortunately" i repaired nearly every socket 5/7 board i got under my soldering iron.
Only got one that's bad, and take the socket.

I’m contemplating figuring out how to add 3 register multiplier support to the s1564.

I assume any mod would only be needed on cpu0?

Or will it be needed on both?

Prob both for bf2 right? As probably not connected?

Uhhh, guys I just got the third multiplier jumper to work…..

I did this mod to my tillamook,

It pulls tillamook bf2 over to ss7 bf2 position and then injects it with 3.3v from vcc3 using a 330ohm resistor.

So I was trying to set the tillamook to 133 but no combo of the two would work, so I tried the third and now I can select 4x, 3.5x, 3x, 2.5x, 2x

So it may be that the back of the socket could use a little smd resistor between bf2 and vcc3

I also plugged in a 400gp and tried setting 4x like the tillamook, it didn’t want to go to 4x

I think we need to install a pull up resistor on the cpu socket.

I assume installing it between bf2 and vcc3 would do the trick. 330-2200 ohm would probably work.

I think the bf pins are connected between the two sockets. So doing it to one should do it to the other.

Also, the only cpus that work in dual don’t use bf2 so it wouldn’t matter on the second socket anyway

Re: Bf0, Bf1, Bf2 Multiplier Mod

Some interesting discoveries about that top jumper in the multiplier jumper block.

Turns out it goes to tillamook bf2 but doesn’t have a pull up.

With a simple bridge mod you can get amd k6 ss7 multipliers working.

But it makes it incompatible with cyrix chips.

Ultimately We need a pcb for all the different mods with switches to enable or disable them to keep everything compatible with all the different chips

Isn’t it wild that the tyan s1564 has a jumper for bf2 that was used on the tillamook. (Of course, it’s worthless without a pull up though) Seems intel was at a time letting board mfgs know that they planned on using that pin for bf2. But then changed their mind and released it only for mobile and ditched plans for 266/ 300mhz pentium mmx chips it seems.

Did a windows ME k6-3+ 400 run. (Single cpu of course)

Radeon 9200 pro
