Hi everyone,

Just saw another interesting article at hackaday.com that may interest you.

https://hackaday.com/2022/04/18/ray-traced-do … -really-shines/

Raytracing sure is fascinating, I think.
It also has a CRT filter, if I understood the comments correctly.

These raytracing ports of old games are the one thing that really make me want to have a modern powerful gaming PC. It's pretty cool how well it works, even in Doom, which lacks actual dynamic lighting so the modders had to assign a bunch of lighting properties to objects in the world.

I'm looking forward to Half-Life with raytracing the most. That one just looks insane.

Finally accurate reflections on the Colt! 😁

One of examples when ray-tracing is not a good idea at all, because Doom lighting model was too simplistic. Half-Life should be looking fine though, because original baked lightmaps were already simulating realistic lighting.

Which is why a flashlight is included, and it's an awesome addition! If the author can fix a few remaining annoyances then this will be my preferred way to play DOOM going forward.

Life? Don't talk to me about life.

Basically that's fixing problem with duct tape.

It may be interesting as a tech demo, but on the visual side it doesn't look like something I'd actually want to play. A bit like ZdoomGL/GZDoom with just the annoying visual distractions turned up to 11.

I often joke about how Raytracing sometimes comes down to making an entire game's floors all shiny, reflective and wet.

Mario 64 RTX. Now shiny and wet!

Everything casts a reflection. 🤣

When pixel shaders became a thing even dirt roads started to look like they had a glass coating. When the original HDR became a thing you needed to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes with some games. Et cetera. I wonder has there been a new graphical gimmic that hasn't immediately been cranked to the max without any notion to subtlety.

That said, as someone who prefers JDoom (without the 3D models of course, because sheesh) over other source ports, I might actually like this. Ain't buying a RTX card just for this though 😀

Tried this one, everything shiny has a "speckled" look to it. Mouse look is glitchy. Probably need
to dive in and tweak some settings.

Did you try it recently? I think they fixed some of that stuff.

No no. It's the reverse!

In raytracing, If you -the viewer- looks at an apple, then you don't actually look at an apple.
It's you that's been stared at by the apple. 😉

Edit: I do fully agree with everything beeing "all shiny, reflective and wet", also.
That's exactly what you get with classic raytracers! 😄
