SQ3 is definitely one of those instances where the MT-32 shines and doesn't come up short, like it does with some other game scores. It really helps that the composer was a long-time rock musician who seems to know his way around the synth and getting the most out of it. I can only imagine how great the score could have been with more modern hardware, but the MT-32 doesn't disappoint in the end.

Watched it the other day. Good video overall but I feel like you could expand on two things to showcase its flexibility:

+ Fluidsynth/SF2 GM Support - While the supplied General User SF2 is OK it can load pretty damn HUGE SF2s that would be impossible on most vintage machines, and even if you don't want to go to that extreme there are way better soundfonts like Masterpiece that make this thing shine.
+ Ability to remote control it from the command line using mt32-pi-control (which lets you switch from MUNT to Fluidsynth and between ROMs/SF2s on the fly, as well as reset the device if you need it)

That would probably help drive the point across that it is actually the whole package, makes having any other MIDI device redundant..

Thanks, didn't know about mt32-pi-control! That is indeed really useful. And yeah, being able to use absurdly large sound fonts is definitely a good thing. But even without that, the fact that you can have near-perfect MT32 AND GM/GS compatibility in one small package is really good.

I got my McCake in a month ago; sounds great! It makes it very convenient for streaming when using an orpheus sound card with Digital out.

It takes in an SD card extender, a digital encoder, and a larger screen. I really just wanted an SD card extender, I didn't want to have to take the case apart every time I wanted to add a soundfont 😉
