Sadly not just Athlons I remember seeing many mangled P3s with those twist lock heatsinks.

Yea that also happened.
But the P3's are of a different design so you have a little leeway with broken corners before you actually start damaging the chip.
I even remember ppl "lapping" the P3's to improve thermals.
But still, the twist mount was a bad idea =)

Yes .. I have one or two chinesium PSUs that I dont dare fire up or hook up to anything remotely valuable, have had them for oh I guess 10 years now but they were not new when I got them either so they could be a lot older. I do have a Shaw 600 watt PSU that gives me the creeps when ever I pull it out of storage, its got amazing numbers for the +5v and +12v rails but ...The brand name just sends chills down my spine and it quickly gets shoved back in its dungeon.

From experience SHAW PSUs deserved their reputation for being powerful piles of shite that will happily fuck your week up with zero notice.

There will always be shitty units, regardless of age.
I never heard of "Shaw" before. I hope I never have to see one first hand 🙂

Rather infamous cheap but powerful Chinesium brand of PSU here in Australia, pretty sure they were just a rebadged brand from one of the anon Chinesium factories but yeah .. they were terrible for just randomly killing PCs. (By powerful I mean the sticker says its 600 watts .. so it must be 600 watts right type of powerful 🤣)

Maybe equivalent of 600W of TNT 😋

These are twist mounted? 😮
Never seen such a design with this late a heatsink. Last one I saw that had to be turned was an early Pentium one (without MMX 😜)
You sure these are twist mounted btw? The silver colored ones I have of similar design are not...or I really missed it somehow xD 😜

Not only is it common knowledge, it even sais so on the packaging "For socket 370 only" 😋

Yea you hook them on and twist to tension them.
And also pray you don't hear a crunch ^^

And to be fair, S370 precedes Socket A so many heatsinks just say S370 on them even tho they work just fine on Socket A.

Twisting those things on is the most nerve racking few seconds. It was the worst idea for a retention system.

It was kinda fine for s7 though.
I have a couple of the silvery colored ones (they have a copper slug iirc). Not sure these are also twist mounted but they look similar as heck.

They are fine if you use them on PPGA CPU's.
I mean they would look right at home on an ABIT BP6!

Received this gem today, brand new in sealed box, a first generation Xbox 360 Pro, system board either Xenon or Zephyr due to the 203-watt power supply printed on the box label. I couldn't pass it up because it's definitely got the original blades dashboard, version old enough to be exploited via the original diode JTAG method, the most reliable and stable Xbox 360 exploit there is. Granted being a first generation system it's also must susceptible to RRoD, but I believe enough is known about that issue now that I can do enough preemptive cooling mods to at least considerably prolong the life of the system, if not completely prevent it.

I owned so many of these systems back in the day, it'll be fun going down this road again. I must have had 4 or 5 Xenon systems, a Zephyr or two, a few Falcons and one Jasper which I still have. All of them red ringed eventually 🤣.

Saw a DFI K6BV3+/66 1mb REV B2 Socket 7 board hit eBay and since its similar to the DFI K6XV3+/66 and supports the K6III+ 550ACR out of the box I snapped it up to add to my collection of K6III+ boards, wasn't a terrible price at 99 USD as i have seen similar boards in working condition go for a lot more. (Comes with a 233MMX and 32meg of Ram)

Caps look to be ok but I will very likely recap it if it has not already been recapped, also want to look into modding it to have 2mb of cache since it looks to have the capacity for it.

Yes, the K6BV3+/66 is the AT version of the K6XV3+/66.
I think the B stands for Baby AT while the X stands for ATX.

Sell the MMX and you're at 80 bucks for the board.
Not terrible, but also not a steal. Hirsch and I got our four K6XV3+/66 for less than 50 bucks each.

Yes, K6BV3+/66 and K6XV3+/66 come with either 1x512KB, 1x1024KB or 2x1024KB soldered.

I can accept the prices, comes part and parcel of being stuck out in the boondocks of the world 🤣, the worst part of buying internationally is the import costs on top of the exchange rates, its why I try not to buy anything that needs Euro currency as the exchange rates are abysmal and shipping from Europe can be .. slow if its from Germany then it'll be doubly slow due to German efficiency .

4 sticks@375MHz (1 is Kingston HyperX)

Wow, congrats!! What is the trick to getting DDR >400MHz? I have been hunting for 466/500 sticks for many months.

There's no secret you probably aren't aware of already.

I have found searching for RAM to be a very 'trying' experience when looking for more specific features. A large number of sellers which have all but the vaguest of descriptions and titles - then there's an even larger number of sellers which blanket their listings with every non-related title/description under the sun, so you get a ridiculous amount of garbage to sift through. However, if searching with precise keywords, the results return sellers knowing what they have and often price them out of orbit (unsurprisingly) due to lack of competition and inventory on the market. Otherwise, as with most other things, modules priced to sell are gone "like that" (I presume).

The standard methods:

  • Luck - right place, right time.
  • Vague description.
  • Seller doesn't know (or care) what they have.
  • eBay makes a "magical" recommendation.
  • All of the above while rummaging through unwanted listings - similar to the experience of searching through someone else's attic.

It was to my 'fortune' all of the above aligned together and I stumbled upon this decently sized lot with a vague description by eBay recommendation - only mentioning they were DDR 256MB modules. $99.00 + tax. Shipping was free. Everything else I have seen is $100-300 for just a pair! Granted, most listings are for 512MB and greater modules.

Putting aside the occasional 'fantastic deal,' it's ironic I can rationalize 3dfx card purchases with... "Oh... these are priced just like, or somewhat below, or 50% below if I had bought them when they first came out, so it's OK to buy... it's a good deal!" But I don't use this 'logic' for RAM and other things, with which I don't have the same desire to own.

Out of curiosity, what's the retro use case for DDR > 400 modules, other than overclocking?

I think I still have two KingMax 512 MB DDR500 sticks that I bought for my Athlon64 back in 2005.

Fun!

I wasn't aware there was anything faster than PC3200 back in the day, also, since I wasn't much of an overclocker. I think I only put together 1 DDR400 machine, and that was it. Some board based on Gigabyte, which I can't recall.

Put on your thinking caps everyone! I have 2 video cards, which both arrived today as shown in the pictures below.

A - ATI Radeon 8500LE - The seller shipped it in a thin-padded bubble envelope with no anti-static wrap and no additional protection. The card was also filthy - like a laser jet printer cartridge exploded over most it (particularly within and around the heatsink/fan). The photo shown was after cleanup - there was no way I was putting this card as it was into any of my motherboards. Arrived from California.

B- Elsa GLoria II Pro - The seller shipped it double-boxed, the outer box was also reinforced with additional cardboard, anti-static wrap, and bubble-wrap; PLUS additional newspaper protection covered in tasty news, food, and bicycle sales. They even markered in an arrow to tell me which way to pull the tape sealing the anti-static wrap. One of the cleanest cards I have ever received. No maintenance was required. Arrived from Germany.

Which card was the stud, and which one was the dud?
