So I did receive that 2.2v 300gp and it happily seems to work at 2.4v and 333mhz so here's some testing I did with a GF2 MX400 and a P5A 1.04. I didn't really tweak any settings yet or even install a soundcard so it's not really an "official submission"

That's quite an overclock! The regular frequency of that CPU is something about 225MHz or 233MHz, right?

Yup! Maybe there's something to it that 2.2v chips are good clockers anyway since mine did seem to do 300mhz at 2.2v quite well too.

It's rather unclear what exact process node was used for what chips when it comes to the later Cyrix CPUs.

It is? I don't know actually. Could be I just missed it?
I do know is that years ago nobody really knew, was this mystery solved in the meantime? I'd like to learn about it.

It's buried somewhere on CPU-World. I think they came to the conclusion that 2.2V was much too low for a .25 micron CPU, so the process must have changed. I believe several CPUs were de-lidded to confirm this.

In the case of the 300 2.2 vs a 400/433 2.2:

The back of the chips where the lids are have changed shapes as different cores were used. The 2.2v 300 is identical to a 400/433gp where as a 2.9v 300gp is larger

Here's the differences on the back. 2.2v is smaller than 2.9v.

I think I have all the different processes here. The P166s should be the same process as the lower voltage *L CPUs. The P150 is comparatively huge.

Good job. Yep!

If you look on the back of the pentium mmx chips also they changed the epoxy pond shape a few times there also. Though I’m not sure if there is as direct of a correlation there. Size and shape seemed to change with them. Guessing size was more significant than shape.

I tested some of the Cyrix\ibm cpus in my collection, I did the msdos test suite only since despite what someone says their result are quite steady (the margin of error is contained in 0,1 fps or 1 tick in doom), I don't think it's a coincidence that the number are pretty much the same with different cpus tested.
I also used 6x86ctl with -q switch to have a briefly check of the revision and enabled features (zipped as attachment), first letter identify the cpu brand (cyrix or ibm), the numbers is the pr-rating printed on the cpu, for pr333 the last letter indicates the top color s for silver, g for gold.

Test Machine:

Cyrix\ibm cpus at 200 mhz (100x2)
Aopen AX59PRO 1mb cache
128 mb memory 7ns with tightest timings
Geforce 2mx400 video card
Compact flash card

Enough with empty words and let's just show numbers.

So apparently the problem is not the voltage, there has been a performance cut between the pr300 and pr333, since the frequency and bus are the same on my testing, it's clear enough that they changed something in the cpu, and even revision doesn't seem to matter.

Feel free to prove me wrong or right with your tests and not empty accusations.

I just noticed, it seems the 433gp cores are even easier to spot being that they have extra pins, five pins thick diagnally on all four sides.

This is a fun thread. I need to bench my cyrix cpus and join the fun. 😀

It would be sweet if some of the people here could try out wintune97 and export their results to a wtx file and post it here or in this thread:

Wintune97 is a benchmarking program that tests the computers ALU FPU VGA disk and ram speed. It also has a database that stores the benchmarked scores. You can import and export scores to wtx files that you can share.

Nice, I hadn't noticed this myself 🤣
I'll check my own stash of Cyrix CPUs to see if I can verify this and if there's any outliers in there 😋that is if I don't forget.

Here is my humble little rig.
I decided to remove the k6-2+ from my Tekram p5MVP-B4-1M and try out my Cyrix.
This is a 2.0v Cyrix MII-266GP
It is clocked at 350mhz 3.5*100@ 2.4volt
It would post boot and be somewhat stable at 2.2v and 2.3v but not quite.
It actually remains very cool with just a socket 370 cooler, same as I used with the K6-2+ but the K6 really pumped out the heat at anything over 2.0v

Anyway other specs are a single stick of PC133 Cl2 256MB
Voodoo 3 3000@183mhz

First time attempting to post screen caps so go easy on a guy?
Another shout out to Sphere478 for the inspiration and guidance on the CPU purchase.

Yeah, I was thinking about trying some other sticks. I actually put my GeForce 2 GTS in there , thinking the hardware TnL would help my scores. But for whatever reason I couldn't get it to install. Tried several driver versions but kept throwing errors. Not sure what was going on, but kinda ran out of time and had to get kids to bed. I will see about getting it working and maybe try some Radeon cards as well. I have 7200, 7500, 8500 and a few other GeForce cards as well.
