Got a nice little haul recently, I think I now have all the major ESS sound cards, I already had the 688F+968F, 1868F, 1869E and 1938 Solo-1 and picked up the Allegro, Canyon3D and 1688F+968F in this lot. Just need the Maestro and I think I may have all the major models, also grabbed a Sound Blaster CT 2810 that was going for cheap along with a Yamaha 718-s.

I have a thing for ESS sound cards, have always found them to be exceptional replacements for creative cards, the Terratec card I think was the big grab, it looks amazing if the photo is true.

The odd one out in this haul was a 64mb GeForce 256 DDR which I saw pop up for 125 bucks, which is considerably less than the other 32mb models listed right now.

32Mb DDR models are going for more usually 150 - 200 USD, SDR when they do get listed are usually around 80 - 100 USD not that I would ever buy a SDR model as even 50 bucks would be too expensive. I think people who have access to other means of getting these cards can indeed get them for far less and tend to forget that with eBay you are at the mercy of market conditions, what the seller is willing to sell the part for and how high a price you can accept. I dont have easy access to other markets and must use eBay or simply go without, I guess I could use Japanese Yahoo Auctions but thats far more hassle than I want.

Well if i have the chance i will be happy even with returning as far as 2010, not 2000.. As even back then there was so many, many things for pocket change even, afer that and specially after 2015-2020 (specially 2020 as there was massive lockdowns) many things got big bumps in price.. Also LGR, Phil and others that have channels did inform many what to look for.. Imagine here even the filthy scrappers knows that 3Dfx cards are valuable, and even ASUS and ABIT boards... The nasty part is that most of these baboons dont even bother to test these 3Dfx cards, dont even give any option to return the part if is DOA or bad..

Slot A is not so hard, sure is rare, but the good boards are very few.. ASUS, GIGAbyte, MSI, Tyan that is the main ones.. I am not sure if AOpen did ever made Slot A boards.. But anyway these days everything sells for alot.. Just look for stuff, and when u find some nice 3Dfx cards many of them sell some get money, buy whatever u want.. Or even better NOS items from some abandoned warehouse and if you are lucky enough u will not only end up with some very good stuff (for example i founded brand new NV1 cards 15 of them and 17 new even NOS sealed Hercules Kyro II cards) that when u safe for urself like 1 or 2 card, rest u will sell, you will end up having Voodoo V, GUS, and many expensive stuff, you may even make profit...

EISA is a 32-bit interface while ISA is 8 or 16-bit.

If used with the E-isa side in the E-isa slot it would get a 32bit connection along with higher bandwidth over the regular Isa slot.

It’s pretty crazy some of the solutions they hacked up to work around limitations.

Oyy shit did not know that eISA is 32 bit... Now that is surprise really.. Wonder what the deal is with VESA and eISA... They should have gone straight to eISA instead of making VESA slots.. But guess many companies = many standards. Using eISA audio and LAN cards wont prove to have any difference, but having eISA on the memory, CPU, VGA will be useful. I still think i will go for my TSeng ET4000 ISA card for my Compaq DeskPRO 486 with eISA slots, as the Compaq Qvision card is not as fast as the TSeng for DOS games, but will see....

Sadly most DOS VGA games don’t benefit from 32bit bus at all (16 bit framebuffer writes). So in DOS EISA cards are just as slow as ISA. They are just a hair faster in GUI when using 32bit drivers.

When it comes to graphics. VESA is much faster than anything on EISA . Even 16bit chips like Cirrus 542x series. It is the clock speed that matters. Not the bus width.

VLB is capable of running at the speed of the CPU and provides a direct path between the processor and the installed card. An EISA slot only runs at the double speed of a 16-bit ISA slot.

Nice, I do have one myself (I think I posted it here around 2 years ago). They are pretty unique indeed as they are: 1) ISA/EISA hybrids, 2) they have S3 928 chip, 3) they can be used as ISA card which is rare when it comes to S3 928-chip cards - it's usually found on EISA and VLB cards (I think Spea V7 Mercury is maybe another card with 928 and ISA).
