Picked up a 486 DX2 with battery corrosion for free. Going to clean it with vinegar, baking soda and finally isopropanol and distilled water while I wait for some tools I've ordered. Especially that free floating trace. Haven't had a VLB system since I was a kid so I want to save it, I'm used to soldering micro electronics but I've never had to do this kind of corrosion work so it'll be an interesting project

Looks a bit critical but could be doable. Depends on the degree of damage after all that green sh... is removed and if you need to remove the ISA slots and other larger parts.
I can also recommend "Plastik 70" by Kontakt Chemie for conservation afterwards if that's available at your location.

Ah, and, something more: IF you can't save it I would kindly like to apply for that chipset. Need one to repair a board I have for some time now. Been looking for some unrepairable battery leakage victim as donor since but they are hard to find. So give me a tap if you feel this could save another one if it can't be saved itself. Thx 😀

ISA sockets looks fine, its really only trace amounts of the corrosive substance that leaked from the battery along the edge of the case that has gotten onto the ISA cards and down into the sockets, just specs. I got some UV cured paint in the mail from beyond the great wall for the repairs.

If I cant repair it I can send it your way, it really depends on the damage. It doesnt look too bad and I am confident in fixing traces. Board is IDed as Pine Technology PT-429G with UMC UM82C493/491 [UM82C491, UM82C493] chipsets.

the amount of distilled water I'd need to properly wash boards would be unreasonable ^^

You could distil your own water. Just evaporate and catch the steam and let it condensate into another container.

I've seen a nifty design where you use the sun and a clear plastic cone to catch the water vapor.

I have two dehumidifiers in my basement that produces over 4 litres a day during summer

I have one too and I can attest that a dehumidifier is probably the easier way to get distilled water.

I like it that you mention distilled water, I never really understand those recommending soaking motherboards in tap water.

I guess it is sometimes ok (at least for a while) but tap water has a varying degree of chloride content, which is corrosive.

It's not a problem as long as you won't allow it to evaporate leaving residue behind. I usually clean stuff with tap water then I use a small amount of electronic water (highly distilled, very clean water) or IPA to wash the tap water away. Works perfectly fine.

I think it doesn't mean Golden Sample here, but GS as a model with NV42 GPU (110nm, 12pp, 5vs). The older NV41 was 130nm and used in the 6800. Both for PCI-E natively - for AGP was needed HSI bridge, natively for AGP was GPU NV40 (130nm, 16pp, 6vs).
But I could be wrong.

now i know why i couldn't get a pic of the underside? maybe the bridge is a weak sell point? but i don't mind as long as it works properly otherwise they can have it back 🤣 i will post a quote when i get a pic of the underside just for grace 😀

and here is the underside photo; the unit has arrived. I have some fun to be had (hope it survives benches)

Snagged this beauty for a song:

It had a lot of problems obviously, but its from 1995 so its excusable.
Flat Dallas CMOS battery ofc, easily fixed.
Both the floppy and CDROM (original i think) needed cleaning and lubing, but they sprang to life!
The 4x CD has problems reading some CDR's tho that's common on old drives.
And the PSU was pretty much caked with dust.
So a total disassembly and clean later (not a smokers case!) its presentable again.

Swapped the anemic Pentium 75 for a P133 and upgraded the pathetic 8MB RAM to 64MB.
The HDD was working but sounded like an angle-grinder, so that also got swapped for a similar one.
Cloned over the installation, but I'm pretty sure its been reinstalled and any special software lost.
Also the ISA modem was swapped for an Intel NIC.
Fun fact: it has a 6v power output in one of the expansion bays, presumably to power the external speakers (?).
The on-board PCI CL5434 (with upgraded VRAM) is incredibly slow in windows but does OK in DOS games.

Anyways, I guess the hunt for peripherals is on!

Sleek looking box, I think the last/only Fujitsu HDD I had also sounded like an angle grinder, so maybe their default noise.

Oh yah, sorry, I left everyone pissing themselves with antici....pation as to what high octane machine I would use that throbbing powerhouse of graphiccy might, the FX5200 in... probably that P4 box I bought for the superdrive some months back.

Unicorn herding operations are proceeding, but all the totes of hens teeth and barrels of rocking horse poop give them plenty of hiding spots.

Sounds good.
I decided against those UV cured paints because I didn't read very positive about them and didn't want to risk more bad than good on the PCBs needing treatment.
But maybe I've just seen the wrong tutorials.

Always thought 1995 and black cases are mutually exclusive, aren't they? 😀

Saw this little beauty on eBay from a well known seller of quality CPUs at the right price and decided it was worth having a 2.2v Cyrix CPU in my collection, I do have a few others but they are the older 2.9v models.

The attachment MII 2.2v.jpg is no longer available

Not sure if I will make a build around it or keep it for testing and benchmarking stuff, though it might make a fun little DOS Testing rig CPU.

Maybe not that old, but I bought a Dell Ultrasharp (1907fp) for 5$. It has height tilt and even a swivel function and it seems only to be slightly used. I also like that it has both VGA and DVI and an usb hub is a plus.

Picked up an IBM PS/1 monitor, it's strange though how it has no IBM markings on the front, and the PS/1 logo is weird compared to what I've ever seen before...

How weird indeed
And 128-002 gives only one relevant result in my searches and that could very well be your monitor.
Its not like IBM to change or allow a different logo like that.
Possibly some promotional or maby even prototype of some sort?
Tho that's unlikely since its manufactured years after the PS/1 came to market.
Could ofc. be some shady manufacturer trying to cash in on the PS/1 brand =)

Still, matches the computer nicely =)

Was/is a 1080MB Quantum Fireball.
Don't know if its the original disk but manufacturing date suggests it might be.
Happy that I could backup the contents before it inevitably goes to hardware heaven =)

Pulled and cleaned the cards from the rescue 486, a p86c911 marked card, that's an S3 chip right? And a CT2260 Vibra 16, those are the cheaper OEM cards if I understand this correctly.

From ebay I got two and 5x86 P75 for the machine I'm actually building one 133v16bgc and one w variant, i blame watching too many YouTubers for getting two of these.

Finally a Matrix Millenium 4MB TVP3026-220PCE that's probably going to be used over the S3 Trio i got from another deal.

Motherboard for the build is in the mail and i got a new in box techmedia case shipped from the states that i haven't opened yet, looking forward to getting this built.

Ah, yeah with thinking about it, I can't remember seeing a Fujitsu 3.5 IDE bigger than 300MB so maybe their HDD venture died off early 90s... I'm not sure their PC arm went on much longer, they were in bed with Siemens Nixdorf through mid to late 90s. It's possible your machine will have similarities with the Scenic line of theirs.

If my memory doesn't fail me then Fujitsu definitely had drives in the Gigabyte range (3 4 6 8 10.. ). Can't say I liked them, tended to fail quite often, at least the batches I had the pleasure of working with.

Right to repair is fundamental. You own it, you're allowed to fix it.
