VGM files can contain music for various sound chips.
Universal VGM player would need to emulate all the chips.

I guess Mod Master doesn't emulate anything, and can only play a file if matching hardware is present.

BTW, there was an idea to emulate CMS using OPL2 or OPL3, but it seems it wouldn't sound 100% correct - Idea CMS emulation via TSR

It's the VGM you put in the zip file. GB_MONI1.VGM
Audio card is a Soundblaster 16PnP, my PC is an Amstrad PC2086 XT 8MHz.
The error is : Replay error: CMS not found.

Thanks

Hi,

It is normal this file is for CMS/Game Blaster.
Even if a CMS chip is present you need to declare its I/O port in the devices config menu.
There is no CMS in a sound blaster 16

The only .MOD player supporting VGM. 😀

Ah ok 😀
Does it play native, or call external programs like sbvgm ?

It is native, AND use SBVGM for not supported devices/Files.

Just place SBVGM in the same folder.

It doesn't seem to see more than 1MB on GUS PnP/InterWave .. is this known?

Yes, not implemented.
For the moment, I never used a module with >1Mb samples :)

It would be pretty impressive to see a 286 play back a 8MB XM file :D
Do you own or have access to a PnP so you could develop/test?

I'd love to use modmxt on all my computers; the "playlist" functions and such are the best I've come across.

Hello, I have tried the mod master xt v1.0 with my gravis ultrasound max and when I play a mod for example I only hear part of the mod completely cut off and without synchronism, it is heard in chunks. My gus max is well configured (jumpers) and works well in pinball fantasies and other gus players. I'm using it on a 286 with 4.11 drivers, any idea what the problem could be freddy?

Thanks.

Hi,

The GUS MAX use GF1 like the standard GUS so it should work.

Can you try removing the Config file ? (MODMXT.CFG)

I removed the cfg file and same issue, sound like channels cut off and on all the time, it sounds, but with this strange behaviour.
I checked the mixer on the gus and all fine like it should be, and like i said the gus works fine with other players and games.
No idea what else to do or check.

Thanks.

Have you tweaked your ISA bus speed? I have had similar issues when the bus speed has gone >10MHz with GUS Classic, perhaps the Max is more sensitive?

The 286 mainboard is at 8mhz now, same problem, i dont know if can change the isa bus speed.

I think is some kind of incompatibility with the gus max, anyone tried mod xt with a gus max ?

Thanks.

4 channel mixing @ 30kHz on an 8086 8MHz without stuttering is really amazing. I'm also a bit amazed at how fast the 150kB module loads to RAM after you select it in the file browser. Feel like sharing the source code?

386:
- CPU: 386DX-40 (128kB external L1 cache)
- RAM: 8MB (0 waitstates at 40MHz)
- VGA: Diamond SpeedSTAR VGA (ET4000AX 1MB ISA)
- Audio: SB Pro 2.0 + GUS 1MB
- ISA PS/2 mouse card + ISA USB card
- MS-DOS 6.22 + Win 3.1
- MR BIOS

Hi,

The maximum mix speed depends on the module as well, if it does not need to mix 4 Channels all the time.

Where have you seen 30KHz ? the limit is more around 26/28KHz

Basically, I used a lot of trick, 6 Buffers, Channel mix paused if the buffer calculation is too late, don't do a ADD, but a MOV for the first channel mix (Faster and avoid to clean the buffer before)
The sample loop is extended at the end of the sample, to not test if the sample end is reached all the time.

So, even if the CPU Does not follow, we can't hear problem in the sound.

For the module load speed, it can be much faster if you convert the file to the .MMM format.

I plan to release the code, as a sound system.
I already shared it with some ppls.
