Looking to pick up a DOS era laptop. My preferences would be, in order of importance:

- Compatibility with DOS games roughly early to mid 90s. Commander keen, monster bash, duke nukem 3d, nothing newer or older than this. The older stuff is most important.
- Decent sound. I don't need the best, really just need the sound to work in DOS and not be exceptionally bad.
- Decent scaling so I can play older games and not have a huge black border around the screen.
- Reasonably priced. I'd like to get a toshiba libretto for example, but an untested one is $200 on ebay, good condition much higher. Not looking to spend that much if possible.
- Not too chunky... relatively speaking, obviously. I also like how the Libretto is a bit smaller since it leaves out the touchpad.
- Easy to find parts. Again, relatively speaking.

Any suggestions? I've read a number of the threads here but the selection is pretty overwhelming and I'm having a hard time narrowing down a list of models.

Looking at a Dell CPI D series. Not sure if this is the best but if it's workable the fact that the parts are interchangeable with C series Dells is a huge plus as I have a pile of CPX/C600 laptops and lots of parts for them. Seen a couple recommendations for a NEC Versa M/75 but I am reading conflicting info on DOS sound on these.

The cheapest option is to use DOSBox-X or 86Box on a modern laptop.

The problem of old laptops is they can break down any time and are not reliable. My current laptop is 13 years old. I had to swap DVD drive and graphics card which failed. USB stops working randomly and after about one hour of usage, keyboard stops working. To fix that I need to unplug it from power and it doesn't always help.

Thanks! That 550 looks interesting. Found a decent Tecra 8000 on ebay too, but looks like it has a Neomagic which I have in my Dell CPI which gives me problems with Commander Keen (I assume it's the video card - scrolling is jerky). Seems like the Toshibas are often recommended.

Toshiba Satellite 4000CDT
Pros: Good sound, has basic scaling. Available cheap
Cons: Might be hard to slow it down for the really old stuff.

If you have a strong laps, you may consider buying Dolch PAC portable computer.

The attachment 29740160_2101925056759410_7106057677955923968_n.jpg is no longer available

Inside models with Pentium I CPU there is a regular motherboard with ISA and PCI slots. So it's basically all-in-one luggable desktop. They are quite expensive these days, but I think this is the most flexible in terms of upgrades/downgrades solution.

Regarding laptops, they are good mostly for saving space on a shelf, but they are not so portable anymore because of being quite fragile, quite heavy and because their batteries are not going to work as long as modern laptops' ones. Also it's not much fun using their low quality vintage LCDs. In other words, in practice you most likely are going to use it on your desk at home or in your office.

But, if you travel a lot, take a look at those Toshiba Libretto mini-laptops 20, 30, 50, 60, 70 models. 20, 30 and 60 models were sold in Japan only, but 50 and 70 ones were sold also in US and in Europe. Toshiba Libretto 100 and 110 are nice too, but they have a wide screen which is not so good for old DOS applications and games.
