Normally you should set the BIOS to defaults before you flash it, yup it seems weird but well you just experienced the reason why 😁

Forgot to mention I did that aswell just before flashing. Default 3.10 BIOS and XP 32bit SP4 with no other programs open.

CPU upgrade was a success! Couple benchmarks before versus after below in pictures with top row e6300 and bottom e5800. 3Dmark 2001, 05 and 06 had a huge gain in going from e6300 @ 1.793ghz stock to e5800 3.214ghz. Memory was bios defaults 533mhz. GPU was G92 Asus 8800GTS.

I seriously cannot recommend having e6300 with this motherboard. It can't even clock stock 1.868ghz which CPU-Z reports incorrectly. Motherboard tops out at 256 FSB which is actually 1.793ghz. I am not sure what is up with CPU-Z Benching going from 44 to 120 points single core. Almost 300% increase can't be right unless there is some instructions missing from e6300 which the benchmark uses.

I am not quite happy with results compared to other systems with 8800 GTS I have set up. Probably need to test a few older driver versions since I'm running last 332.21 WHQL for 32bit XP "SP4" drivers right now.

Hi all. Thinking of getting another775 system - options are 775Dual-VSTA or 4CoreDual-VSTA.

I have an E7600 here on my desk - SLGTD spec Wolfdale as per https://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SL/SLGTD.html, but i'm hesitant to go this route again after this chip seemingly killed my last board. I tested it just fine in my IP35 PRO though, so i know it works. I had put the latest PCTreiber bios on before putting it in. Might that have made a difference? If I do get another of these boards, should I go with the latest stock bios or the modified one? Does anyone here have this CPU in either the 775Dual-VSTA or 4CoreDual-VSTA?

2.33e

I had to go back to version 2.30 before CPU multiplier adjustment started working again.

Hi There. With a 4CoreDual-VSTA on the way to me I don't suppose you happen to have those bios files handy and could share them please? Searching the internet for them has been next to useless - I just find dead links to the pctrieber website. I also saw that you tested a bunch of different CPU's and found that the X6800 ended up fastest? even with the beta bios included code for the E7600 Wolfdale? I only ask as I have a stack next to me of E7400/E7500/E7600 chips! I also have both an SL9SB E6600 and a SLACR Q6600. I suppose if I stuck with the 6600's i'd only need the last official bios though.

4CoreDual-VSTA arrived yesterday from Italy and purring along quite happily. Not put the 2.39a bios on it yet. I was going to ask what the bios supported, but then I stumbled across https://soggi.org/motherboards/asrock/4CoreDual-VSTA.htm where it has a link to it as well, and has the support list:

Add support for HD 4350, HD 4550, HD 46×0, 47X0 and HD 48X0.
Add support for E-0/R-0 Wolfdale CPU (E7600, Pentium E6300 supported!).
Support 4 GB DDR2 (~ 3,3 GB usable).
Enhanced Speedfancontrol for PWM-Fans.
Support Enhanced Halt State, SpeedStep and Thermal Throttling.
Instant Boot Support.
Logitech Illuminated keyboard fix.

Quite a useful site!

Hi guys.

So I mentioned before that I have an E7600 chip for use in my Asrock 4CoreDual-VSTA. I'm at work now so don't have the chip to hand, but according to the eBay purchase info it is an Intel SLGTD Core 2 Duo E7600 Socket 775 Dual Core 3.067GHz CPU.
I used to have a working 775Dual-VSTA. I popped the last pctrieber beta bios with E7600 support on and all was well until I put in the E7600. On trying to boot with the CPU in there was a burning whiff and then nothing, so something popped. I tried it in another 775 board afterwards to make sure it worked still and that board booted etc so I know it works. I've been building PC's since about 95 so not new to this - no idea what happened on the 775Dual - I just don't want a repeat and have to get another board, so as you can no doubt imagine - i'm a bit hesitant.. Before I commit to updating the bios on my new 4CoreDual-VSTA and putting this CPU in I just need to check - this is the right chip - right?

The 4Core currently has a P4 D 945 I think and is just fine, so in theory all I need to do is go into the settings and set to defaults, flash the bios, reboot, power off and switch CPU's and all should be good on next boot? Any suggestions other than that?

If the CPU in question is alive, most likely VRM on previous board was in really rough shape. As I've mentioned, that is not premium board material and they're made with very cheap components without much headroom. Another board died from Core 2 Quad right in this thread with exactly same result - CPU is alive.

BTW, does all ceramic caps are in place on CPU?

The 4Core currently has a P4 D 945 I think and is just fine

Try to stress test it. 945 chugs more power than Core 2 Duo 45nm.

Wow.. That video is waaaay too advanced for me! The only time I have picked up a soldering iron since school was to replace the battery holder in a Dreamcast.. then I lost my kit, which is irritating as I have some caps top replace on a Geforce 6200a.

LinX or Prime 95 64-bit should be fine.

Just following the guide on https://obsproject.com/forum/threads/how-to-t … with-linx.5361/ as never used it before. Should have a result soon.

I would test it at least for one hour. Although it will certainly boot with Core 2.

Now testing for 75 mins cos you know - the price of electricity at the moment.. 🙁 I'm assuming the reason for this exercise is to stress the VRM's to make sure the board can cope with high power draw over a sustained period?

But once tested to completion, this would be the correct CPU to go with in your opinion? download/file.php?id=144794&mode=view and I should be safe to switch bios and change to it?

Thanks for all the help btw
