Well, I had Tegel's Mercenaries running, and thinking that Strike Squad would use a similar DOS interface - I figured it would be easy to get working as well. Unfortunately that is not the case.

Again my system is a 2100+ Athlon XP, WinXP Pro w/ SP1, 1GB ram, using VDM Sound 2.0.4 w/ Update 1. I can attempt to play SS with, or without sound, through WinXP's emulation, or with VDMSound, or with DosBox, and with no luck. EVERY time I get the same error when launching it. This is:

Interrupt 0DH, GENERAL PROTECTION FAULT possible illegal segement error code = 8050
eax = 00F00177 esi = 000C0000 flags = 3206 ds = 01BF
ebx = 034ED90C edi= 000C000E eip = 00004229 es = 01BF
ecx = 034ED90C ebp =00C09FFF cs = 0197 fs = 0187
edx = 000C0E00 esp =000C0DF8 ss = 01AF gs = 017FSound Driver isn't in memory

Again, I've tried a lot to get past this, even no sound/music - and to no luck. Any help would be appreciated as usual 😀

Is this an error the game is giving you or an error Windows is giving you?

Yes, it’s my fault.

This is the error that appears on the command line. The game doesn't even really launch, just spits this back out in the dos prompt. I saw another recent post about underneath a steel sky I think, and his error looked identical....

You have a knack for picking the hard ones.

I can't get Tegel's Mercenaries running without switching off digital audio. I'm getting the same message as you for the fail (GPF), but I'm suspecting it may actually be a corrupted archive.

DosBox is no good for either of these (actually, it will run Mercenaries, but without Digital audio, so there's precious little reason to...).

Yeah this is bugging me. It looks like a WinXP thing. Strike Squad works fine under Win98 on my other PCs, but alas, I get the same error on my other WinXP boxes.

With Mercenaries it looks like the digital sound problem is caused by the game's inability to see what DMA the soundcard is on. I always get a "sound DMA not found error" I can't change the dma value from 1 either to check. Adlib sound doesn't come through either, but it runs. Music is good all around. With speedset the game is playable, but yeah..sound effects would be nice 🙁

I have been trying to get my old favorite Strike Squad working on my XP PC as well. I get a very similar error message when the game refuse to start. I am very new at trying to make old games run under XP. My first PC used DOS so I am faily familiar with it but is has been a long time since I messed with it. I would be most grateful for any and all help anyone can give me.

Well its nice to know I'm not the only fan of strike squad left 😀 Unfortunately I don't forsee us being able to play it under WinXP anytime soon. The problem is apparent in all situations, and short of one of the senior members creating a patch for the game we're out of luck. Not a single emu out there changes the error, and its not even sound related. Luckily I can still fiddle with Tegel's Mercs (albeit without digital sound) for now...gotta love that theme song!!!

So you are able to get TM to work by going without sound? I will have to try that, it is not as good as Strike Squad but it will do in a pinch.

Yes, it works nicely with only music. BTW, it plays somewhat fast, but I found that by holding down the right mouse button it works in normal speed 😉 Or..use speedset / pitset and just manually slow it down. I forgot how hard the controls can be heh. What's interesting though is it didn't crash during the hour I played....something it used to do VERY frequently on my old 486... odd how that stability thing goes.
