ok jumpered all back as you say, bios default, old cache chips , only one ram stick 16MB . Same problem no boot with L2

I read also the other thread here where someone has this trace problem. But i not understand is it a line on the board or does it mean the sockets points need new solder?

Still no progress.
So the problem is still: Both caches are enabled, the BIOS showed 256kb but only the L1 cache is enabled.
Is it correct?

I don't see obviously broken traces.

When did you make the last picture, I am asking because I can see jumper 13 on 2-3 and JP 14 on 1-2. Was it before you put back the old cache chips? Did you change the jumpers 13, 14 and 29 after making the picture?
EDIT: That question is not relevant, on the second picture data SRAMs and the 2 jumpers are shown, all seems to be good.

What is also a little bit strange, that your BIOS shows 4 times serial interfaces. It should not be a problem for the L2 cache though.

With this cpu jumper setting system dont even boot with L2. That screenshot is the last screen i see before system freeze. Its the point where the system boot from Disk. No idea 🤷🏻‍♂️

Ok, I understand.
I already asked but please do it again:
Remove all cards, only the video card shall stay in, keyboard, and set a jumper on Turbo switch (turbo shall be always enabled). Do not change any bios settings (harddisk parameters are still there)
Then boot.

When you wait some minutes (seems to be really a loooonnnnngggg timeout), you should see hard disks fail => see my screenshot.

Do you get that? That is important to know.

So this can mean that the cf-ide adapter is maybe cause the problem ..
But why only when L2 is active.
I will try setup a real drive tomorrow.

OK, so the board does NOT crash after enabling the L2 cache. It is trying to boot, so it is alive.
That was important! So board might be good in terms of L2 cache.

Of course without an I/O card we cannot make other tests.
Do you have an ISA I/O card for testing? If yes, then try instead of the Vesa Local Bus one. It is possible that your graphics card and the I/O card do not work together well. I know it is strange, why should this be only the case with L2 enabled.

EDIT: Before doing that, put the VLB I/O card back in, but set jumpers 28 and 29 both to 2-3. That makes the timing on the VL Bus a little bit slower.

Tryed the delay jumper no luck. Than i switched the I/O for a ISA one same.. Than i also switched the VGA for a ISA ..same. This board.. oh 🙄

edit:
I checked the board under my lens and i found something! In the corner of the SiS Chip two pins are shortet 🤦🏻‍♂️

does it work after straightening those two pins with CF card now?
Re: "Fixed" 386sx motherboard works but not with 16-bit VGA card so many people with same CF problem lately, usually in 286-386, might not be a problem in VLB IDE controller made post 1994.

yes after i fixed the pin it boot without problems from CF.
L1+L2 , I also used that fixed l2 writeback bios and optimized the dram speeds. No more Problems .
Run the mashine now with 32MB 256kb cache L2 and writeback L2. I think this is ok for a 486dx2.

my controller runs enhanced 32bit ide, not sure this is a thing for CF.

OK, so now you can revert all debugging stuff....
You already updated to the BIOS with the L2 write back fix, brings some percentage performance. Good.
Then I would recommend buying an Amd 5x86-133, that one has L1 WB cache, I can provide the correct jumper settings 😉 Pentium Overdrive 83 and Cyrix 5x86 are also very good, but both are hard to get and expensive.

I assume that you want to have good performance, otherwise you would not have bought the 128kx8 srams .....

so more as 256kb cache not really do something on a dx2 ? Thats also why i go back to 32MB. I read writeback l2 is 256kb ?
I use it run all the older stuff like wizardry 6,7 ..
For the other DOS Stuff i use a Super Socket 7 system.

cache size actually helps slower 486 cpus. But yes, higher cache sizes make more sense when there is more RAM.
Also cacheable area shall be taken into account:
256kB cache: cacheable area for L2 WT:64MB, L2 WB (with wb fix) 32MB
1024kB cache: cacheable area for L2 WT:256MB, L2 WB (with wb fix) 128MB => both are over the board limit which is 64MB.

So if you like to use 64MB RAM, then go for the 1024kb variant, for 32MB RAM 256kB is fine.

i think i leave it as it is. It has a ct1600 and a ET4000w32p , so a lovely little486dx2 .
