^To what I can say, both MCGA and EGA modes look pretty similar on that TV tube.
Makes me wonder, what could have been done with SVGA or VBE. Could it still have improved picture quality on a late 80s era monitor?
Both 800x600 16c and 640x400 256c were at least possible with early ISA VGAs having 256KB.
800x600 had the advantage of being both SVGA (direct support in game) and VBE compatible (proto-VBE of 1989 supported 800x600 16c mode, as mode 6Ah and 101h).
In popular SVGA implementations, it used same memory layout as VGA/EGA in 16c, making it easy to support.
The old 6Ah mode number has same lenght as a VGA mode number, ideal for patching executables without a recompile.
640x400 by comparison wasn't known until VESA VBE 1.x (mode 100h).
It uses a multiple of 320x200 and supports the same colour count (256c) as mode 13h.
This makes downscaling (integer) to 320x200 possible, thus allowing for using a single set of graphics (640x400 256c).
Also, it works with all basic VGA monitors, with TVs and internal LCDs or gas plasma screens of notebooks/portables of the time.
There are indeed a few 640x400 DOS games in 256c..
I know of two, at least. "Die Höhlenwelt Saga" (the cave world saga) and a platformer..

I've taken a few more screenshots of this game due to its art style and age (1987).
Hope you don't mind.

Windoze
A Windows 3.1 themed Tetris game. Uses Standard VGA.
I consider including a few Windows 3.1 screenshots here, since that video about the Tandy VGM-225 monitor has footage of it, too.
Using Windows 3.1 GUI as a reference for old VGA (and MCGA) monitors in general seems plausible to me..
Most YT videos contain it anyway, and it gives an idea how things may relate to each other. 🙂

xTetris
Tetris game with interesting shaped blocks.
Uses CGA, rather than MCGA. I know, in principle it doesn't belong here. But it has an image of Albert!
You simply can't ignore/exclude such a game. It's Albert, man!

688 Attack Sub
One of the earliest games using PS/2 graphics / MCGA.
Not very good, though. Looks mostly EGA-ish.
Digitized images do benefit the most, I think.
Information:
https://www.mobygames.com/game/2099/688-attack-sub/
Edit: It likely is displaying EGA graphics here.
The game will only use MCGA if no EGA mode can be set (which can be set on VGA cards, usually).
Source : https://trixter.oldskool.org/2017/10/01/the-f … -on-the-ibm-pc/
So for a workaround, the VGA card must either be forced into EGA mode (via MODE utility on ISA VGAs) or by overwriting some EGA files.
My apologies for this mistake here. 😔
