Ran across this new DOS game "Anzu Castle Gracula" from a developer called "RainbowCemetery" at Itch.io.

Also love the non-Apogee-model shareware thingy where you can optionally register the game to show support to the author.

Yeah, haha... I thought that was a nice touch as well.

Interesting. It looks like a 16-color game, but with custom (non-CGA/EGA/Tandy) color palettes.

it looks very nice

It certainly does look like it could've very well been a commercial game back in the late 80s or early 90s.

I'm kind of keeping a mental list of such high quality games (for DOS), both old and new, and it also includes Barren Planet, Betrayed Alliance, MagiDuck, Gene Splicing, 5 Days a Stranger, Mysterious Song, Giddy 3, Crillion '97, Desperabis, Fruit Land, Heroes, Jaguar GR1, Klondike Gold or The Little Pixy 2, to name a few.

When I try to run it I get:

'File not found in module QBVANIA at address 0758:28E4'

P133, DOS 7.1, 64MB

And yes I unzipped it with the -d attrib.

thanks for this list - I only knew Betrayed Alliance (for which I got the manual/hintbook from amazon since it is such an amazing game!)

Same here. Tried on original hardware: 286, and Pentium II.

According to the Itch.io comments the problem should now be fixed.

Very nice game!

And it is great that the developer fixed the issue that happens on a real DOS environment. 👍

Tip: The SBMIDI.EXE driver included with the game can use MIDI devices thru an MPU-401 interface by adding the /3 parameter. Here is a modified START.BAT:

@ECHO OFF
SBMIDI.EXE /3
ACG.EXE
SBMIDI.EXE /U

I added a line to uninstall the driver when quitting.

It would be nice to be able to quit back to DOS as well.

I can't get SBMIDI to play through my MPU401, looking at the switches I dont see any way to specify a port or anything...

I thought at first that it wasn't possible to quit while in-game as well, but the menu can be activated by pressing ENTER (PAUSE control key) then selecting QUIT.

And yeah, there aren't any parameters to set the MPU-401 port with the SBMIDI.EXE driver. Doesn't help that it predates SB16 support so the P variable in the BLASTER environment variable has no effect.
