So how would it function if you plugged in a dial up modem? What do you connect the phone line simulator to?

For a dial-up modem, you'd need to connect at least two modems to the phone simulator. Then you could use one modem to dial up and connect to the other modem.

The phone line simulator itself doesn't connect to anything else. It only works with whatever devices are plugged into it.

I managed to convince my parents to get that second line... and before it was actually ordered, realized that would be a huge mistake and convinced them to go for the then-brand-new DSL instead. Which also turned out to be a huge mistake, switched to cable 6 months later.

I don't think that my modern internet experience has been great. I live in an apartment with terrible wifi interference. I've also have had to deal with really annoying things like DNS problems. Not saying that dial-up was better, but I can't wait until I have something that is stable and just works.

Get some kind of fiber Internet using PON technology, use your own NAT router (not some POS from the ISP), then connect everything wired. 😀 That's the secret to a good modern experience...

Seeing that you're also located in Canada, you'd understand that I would need to take out a mortgage for anything fiber related (-:

I went with the cheap and slow internet package, which probably costs the same as a premium package in the US. (-:

Nah, you just need to take out a mortgage for an overpriced undersized condo in a Beanfield building. In the current housing market though... that might be the problem, not your Internet bill.

I got broadband in the Spring of 1997, when dial-up was still quite tolerable (on of my friends got the same service in August 1996).

It was through a Motorola CyberSurfr (pre-DOCSIS) cable modem.

Getting over 500 KiloBytes per second downstream (FTP) was a game changer.

Sunet in Sweden had an FTP server ( ftp.sunet.se ) that I could download from at over 100 KiloBytes per second accross the Atlantic. That felt like living in the future to me in 1997.

I never saw dial-up quite the same way since that moment.

I got trolled and told that winmodems were a good idea in another thread.

(Sigh)

You started that thread with a very specific descriptor:

And that thread became a "happy hour bar" in no time. With all due respect, you invited trolling behavior by your own, probably without your conscience, as this has been your writing style in every single thread you've created on VOGONS.

DosFreak has repeatedly asked you to read How To Ask Questions The Smart Way; from what I see I'd bet that you haven't. You need to phrase your questions better if you want to EARN useful answers online, here on VOGONS or elsewhere.

I sense mainly exuberant enthusiasm which, AFAICT, has a tendancy, at times, to overshadow nearly everything else for many people, myself included.

That being said, your advice to OP is sound.

@OP Best of luck in your pursuits.

Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyo,
If I have a pci Winmodem, a phone jack, Verizon phone and internet service, a telephone, and a Windows 98 pc, can I manage an internet connection? That would be f-ing awesome. I presume I would add the pci modem, connnect the phone to it, then connect the phone to the jack. Does it work that way? Would it still work today? That would be hella epic. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Just so you know I don't actually have a winmodem or a telephone yet
This is all just in theory

So far reading your posts you dont seem to have told us what it is you are wanting to actually do.

For instance do you want to connect a PC running Windows 98 to the internet using a particular piece of hardware ie a 56k modem but without a POTS subscription?
Do you just want to use a 56k modem on any computer? and use that to connect over a POTS line?

Without knowing what you what to end up with its hard to know what you will need to do it.

Yeah but he doesnt need a TLS to do that, you can do that with an two port ATA like a Cisco SPA122.

All he needs is the ATA, 2x computers with modems.
Tell one port to call the other and they will connect over dial up.

Just to be clear, I wasn't making any recommendations about what the OP should get. I was simply answering the questions they had asked me about telephone line simulators.

My understanding is that OP was looking for suggestions about feasible options to get closest to a dial-up experience while using actual modem hardware.

However, OP changed their mind and decided to look into Ethernet connectivity instead, so the discussion continues for others who have an interest in this.

Ay, sir. I assure you I have got many useful answers from this forum. I've got Quake working, I have a perfect pure Dos/Windows 98 setup (but I ruined it later by changing the sound card) etc
I intend to read the pdf soon.

I think the main problem here is the OP doesnt seem to want to tell us what he actually wants to do, so we cant know what he needs to do it.

I mean why dial in to ISP when you can be ISP yourself. Set up a dial in Linux server.

Nah bro I'm just letting yall talk about whatever you want
I think I'll start another thread if I decide to connect my old pc to the internet.

Yeah you see thats exactly what I thought which is why I asked.
There is no answer to you here because you dont have a clue what youre asking yourself.

Yes you can use a modem to connect an old PC to a modern network to get it online. There are many ways to do what you want to do.

When youve decided that you do actually want to do it Im sure there are many here who can help you out.

Are you or are you not serious about this? You seemed to start this topic seriously enough, then you decided "Bruh no more dial up please", but now you're asking serious questions again... so what is it to be?

If serious, see Re: Awesome Hardware for a Windows 98 PC

Summary:

Phone line simulator (or home PBX I referred to) gives you the line votage.

Then to use the line you need:
- a "server" PC that can run dial-up services (Remote Access Services under Windows NT or 2000)
- a modem in that server PC and client PC

What you do:
- connect server to Internet (through regular Ethernet or WiFi)
- start dial-up service (which should also route dial-up traffic to the server's internet connection)
- dial the number of the server from the client using its dial-up networking software ("Connect to the Internet!" on Windows 98)

If everything is working correctly, you now hear some screeching that starts low&slow and increases in pitch as the handshake commences. Then the connection is established and you should have - very slow - internet connectivity.

I thought the dude was trolling us with that other thread.

After reading through all the replies I thought: hmmm, funny nobody suggested a winmodem yet.

Although it probably is the worst piece of hardware ever, it would actually complete the 1998 experience. I remembered how I suffered with one, with the stupid thing going *clip* and dropping the line every time win98 gets a hiccup, which, as most who know it will know, is frequently.
