Has anyone else had this problem?

So basically the issue is that I run quarantine and I just get a black screen and the game locks up.
I'm pretty sure it is frozen is since the num lock toggle wont work.

I remember I had the game running ages ago but since I've got around to test it recently it won't run.
I tried the CD version after the floppy one and it also had the same issue.
After reading the readme , it suggested turning off emm386 , interestingly it worked in PCem but on real hardware it didn't do anything.

I should also probably mention I used to have a S3 Trio 64 V2/DX but since a while back switched to using a S3 Virge VX.
Is it possible its a conflict issue , given it works on PCem?

Also I couldn't figure out how to get the CD intro to play with sound , it locks up on the first frame after launching qvidaud.bat.
There is another batch file call qvid.bat that runs the intro without sound and that works fine , I read online and other people had same issue.
This also manifests with PCem.

It seems it uses some file player called DOS/VESA DUCK player.

I found the old website.

The attachment dsdk.png is no longer available

Also the patches don't seem to work , the QCD.EXE file locks up the game even with EMM386 diabled on PCem.
Ditto for running on real hardware.

I should probably list my system since it might be a source of issues and is a tricky beast to tame at times.

Maybe try replicating the machine in 86box and see how it goes? If it fails there too, maybe it'd give a clue as to what might be causing the problem. IINM basically all those parts are available in one form or another, except for PowerVR PCX1.

Had this installed on my machine a P133 but don't know if I ever got it to work. 🤣, BTW I did QA on this game when it was released but any troubleshooting or config issues have since left my mind. I had just started with Gametek and I dont remember if I worked on the DOS version or only the 3DO version. I'm working on trying to get it to run.

I noticed on my config the install crashes when it tries to create the directory and when it tries to create the batch files. Maybe this has to do with DOS 7? Don't know.

EDIT: I don't think I worked on this DOS version, don't remember it. I think was just doing customer service at the time of the DOS release. I did all the QA on Roadwarrior though, the sequel.

OK so...

I noticed when I run QVIDAUD.BAT I get a message "VESA Driver Problem".

When I run Q I freeze up on a black screen after getting a PC speaker ringing sound.

I have a 3dfx banshee in this machine so its possible my issues are with that...don't know. I'll keep messing with it.

EDIT : I got the game itself to run, its not enough to set emm386 to NOEMS, you actually need to disable the memory manager completely.

In order to get Sfx I have to run it off of the C drive otherwise I only get the redbook audio.

It's also a very speed sensitive game IIRC and you'll probably want a lower framerate for physics/sound/flickering reasons (there are some very tight timed missions). When Quarantine came out, the 486 DX2/66 was the ideal sweet spot and that's 2 generations behind a PMMX233.

Yeah I did try it in 86box and got it working but not with the exact parts ,
ill try and edit the build to make it closer , so thanks for suggesting that.

I do remember it running way too fast back when used a slot 1 Pentium 2 @233 mhz build so yeah its unfortunately one of those fussy games.
However I've got a throttle blaster installed in the socket 7 so dialing in the speed to get the game running right should hopefully a solvable issue.

Oh neat , would have been pretty cool seeing gametek developing Quarantine 2 , do you have any stories from back then , also did they have thier own in house development tools or a third partys ones?

Btw thanks for the suggestions , I did disable EMM386 by REMing it out on my socket 7 but no dice.

Imagexcel developed Roadwarrior, they soon after became Gametek Canada, which then became Take 2 Canada, which then became Rock Star Canada, but that was long after I left. I believe this was an inhouse engine. This was way early in the day for my QA career and I remember faxing them over lists of bugs I'd found and they would turn around a new build in like a day.

Some stories, from what I can recall offhand, not the most interesting. I remember enquiring if we could do low riders with hydraulics and was told, oh yeah the engine supports that, but it was too late to implement by the time I had gotten to it.

Since you can just remove the CD and replace it with any music CD I use to play it along to Pink Floyd - A saucer full of secrets. The music , which I thought at the time was done by the inhouse musician Barry Blum, but that's not what it says on Mobygames, I thought was really good but after playing through the game countless times it was nice to change it up.

I was so good at that game that when I needed to play through a new build I wouldn't save. That bit me in the ass on at least one occasion when I screwed up near the end and had to start over again.

Oh, 1 more thing, initially the game didn't sell very well, and after the producer Rod Humble left the company I got made a producer as well, and I suggested that the box art for the original release was terrible and that I thought it would do better with a re-release with different box art. Which we did, but I never asked if sales picked up. The original box art was a photograph of the desert, mostly just blue sky and some desert with small shrubs. Its funny I looked online and I can't find the original art anywhere, only the box that was changed by my suggestion.

Here's the redesign:

I never saw the Non_US version box art.

Sorry those are really personal things and not development saga stuff but that sequel went pretty smoothly from what I remember. It started while the company was based in Florida, and we shipped it not too long after moving to California.

Hey sorry for the late reply , thats really cool that you had input on the game i actually just installed 2 and tried it and weirdly unlike the first game it runs fine?

I'm enjoying it a lot , its a pretty good game , its been polished up a fair bit with quality of life features like a training level. And the deserts a nice change of scenery. Musics really good too. Plus impaling peeps at the arena was bloody hilarious.

Glad you like it. I thought it was really good, especially at the time and always wondered why it didn't do better.

Alright so bit of an update i went through a massive lot of inconvenient hoops but long story short I got the game to run.

So here's the thing : my system has 2 hard drives , one with DOS 6.22 and one with Windows 95 , in dos the game won't run as I've already mentioned. So I decided to do a little process of elimination. I have another system running win98 and as it turns out the game ran on that but obvious wayyy to fast.

So naturally I wanted to get it going on the other system with my throttle blaster.

So initially I had the same issue when switching to dos mode in 95 where the game locked up , but I found if I ran the q.bat without booting into dos mode and disabling the autoexec and config.sys options the game would run , so what i had to do was make my own batch file and run all the things I wanted consecutively through there without going to dos mode , so I got the floppy version going first.

But the cd version would get ingame then get some garbled graphics and lock up

The attachment 20241018_012509.jpg is no longer available

, which was maybe due to it either not loading the cd drive or because I patched it , I can't remember which solution solved it. So the game ran , and I even got the intro video to run and the audio played .. but the cd music wouldn't ingame and it turns out... it was because the cards line in was set to low , so I ended up using sb mixerset to set it accordingly.

After that the music played, and I could slow down the game but one issue remains , I've got a whole bunch of broken graphics and I'm not sure why, I think on the 98 pc it had a similar issue so not sure what thats about. But yeah I'm about 80% of the way to getting the game fully playable. What a pain in the ass.

Also after I patched the game if I run it via the newer exe from the patch it complains about not being able to run in windowed mode and won't start , but if I run it via the q.bat that came with the install it would run

thank goodness it didn't Dune. but also it hopefully didn't cause confusion with the earlier year's Hell Cab either. The minimalist cover art trend of the mid-90s was headscratching.

(i probably have a slight fondness for some humble games and they always lean towards green colors and deep black for some reason. And then I just remembered he did CyberBykes for Gametek and how unscrupulous the single player implementation was)

Okay I've done some more digging and it seems as if the same issue pops up in 86box , which is , if you run the game via win 98 or 95 it breaks the graphics.

I guess it just really wants the game to run in dos and nothing but.

Yep so running it in proper boot to dos mode in 98 fixes it.

Well bummer I might have hit a brick wall then , because obviously some kind of conflict is preventing me from running the game in actual dos 6.22 or 95 boot to dos mode ,

and in the non proper double click the exe to run the game without dos mode the graphics get broken.

I guess having 7 expansion cards in one system is bound to cause all sorts of problems.

It sucks though its the one game I can't get working , I even got the virge 95 version of destruction derby running on my VX. But this one game won't yield.

I did 4 of the levels in cyberbykes. We built the levels then the creator made a change to the code and it changed the numbers of the shapes in the editor and that screwed up some of the designs we did. That was a single programmer who all we really did for that game was packaging, level design, and distribution. That was the deal. He re-wrote the story I had designed for my 4 level mission also. Wasn't too happy that it got messed up but the guy said sorry so...

I was trying to design another 4 mission campaign that had to do with chasing a train around the level and taking out pieces of the train but I came in at like 2AM the last day and fell asleep, so I didn't get my second campaign in the game. The plan was to come in really early and work on it all night, but it didnt work. However I don't think it would have made a big difference in the overall game. I think most people probably never even completed a single mission.
