Maybe someone can help me out:

On my HOT433 (433AUS23 BIOS) when I enable "LBA" for my 40GB HDD it detects the primary master correctly on boot but after that nothing happens.
When I disable LBA though it boots normally, but limited to 504MB.

Is this some limitation of the 40GB HDD which is of course only detected as an 8GB HDD in the BIOS anyway?

With LBA enabled or disabled, the geometry translation is likely different. This means you need to repartition / reformat the drive if you toggle the LBA mode in "Standard CMOS setup".

Ah, I get it. Probably a BIOS bug prevents correct operation. Many hard drives of that time have a jumper to limit the capacity to 32GB. If your drive does, try to enable that mode. I don't know AMI BIOSes that well, but I am quite confident that Award BIOSes at that time did freeze with drives exceeding 32GB, if they supported drives above 8GB at all.

You have a 486 motherboard with a 1994 BIOS core. 8.4Gb is the best you can hope to get working. I don’t think biospatcher will be able to do anything with such an old BIOS.

It may be possible to patch the Award 4.51PG eSupport upgrade version 01/05/2001-UMC-881/886A-2A4X5H21C-00 using biospatcher.
