if you've installed and are running socket services, running ataenab which is supposed to be an all in one tool shouldn't be necessary. There should just be a couple more files as part of cardsoft that need to be run for ATA cards to detect and work - atadrv.eve and cardid.exe

Totally agree. No need to use ataenab as the Cardsoft has all necessary drivers. Let alone ataenab/cbata are paid tools, trial versions have an annoyig delay and work for two weeks only.

Well there probably is one benefit from most people's perspective which is that ataenab being newer means it can work with larger Compact Flash cards like 1GB or 4GB cards. That's something that early versions of cardsoft and some PCMCIA controllers don't do very well, but later versions of cardsoft for DOS should solve that.
I know that the Toshiba card manager software got an update to the ATA driver in 1995 that makes it work well with larger CF cards.

Good point. Yet don't quite remember if DOS supports partitions more than 2 gigs. 6.22, I believe doesn't. Maybe the 7.x versions do.

I know, but I find it more convenient to load ataenab.exe instead, since usually this is a one-time operation (maximum about once a month), in my case, the same combination is used for pcmcia sound cards and I don't want to leave unnecessary components constantly loading, to not waste memory every boot. I found easier to just run app after boot, instead of fix autoexec/config, or add menu options especially for this. And finally, Win 98 and I believe even Win 95 support pcmcia cards immediately after insert without extra drivers.

Both a microdrive with 4gb disk, and the EZ-Gig adapters did not work, but I did successfully got a PCMCIA-CF adapter and a 512mb card working with this machine... that's my update.
