I swear, I've never seen such a finicky installer. It didn't work on my Pentium MMX at all (it wouldn't read from the optical disk drives no matter how I configured the arrangements of drives [although the Pentium system has its own quirks]).

I'm finally getting it installed on a Pentium 4 with the Trio64 video card installed. I had to set the partition size to 512MB just to start moving files over from the optical drive. I'll migrate over to the Pentium MMX system once I have a working OS on the SD card.

Nice,I also had a problem installing it.( I first set cd rom ide to 1:0 and disk 1,2gb to 0:0).

For drivers,I didn't load anything from device drivers disk,I inserted beta drivers disk and first I chose "adaptec 154x series scsi adapter"(Only by choosing that first worked, strange) and then "primary/secondary dual controller device driver"(by hitting 7) and then continue.

OK, so I got a blank screen once I installed the drivers for the Stealth 64 DRAM on the Pentium 4. The system gave a kernel panic when I booted into verbose mode. I don't know how to boot into basic VGA mode now that I set the system to use the Trio64 driver.

I wonder if the Trio64 is just a bit of a dud in NextStep. I'm going to reinstall NextStep on my Pentium 4 with a Cirrus Logic PCI card (GD5446) instead and see if it works better.

I always remember trouble getting color modes working with NeXTStep 3.3 on PC hardware.
OpenStep 4.2 with Patch 4 has a generic VESA driver that is easier to get working.

If you haven't already, make sure you have NeXTStep 3.3 Patch 3 installed.

Boy, I've tried three different PCI cards, and none of them have worked beyond BW VGA. I'm out of time to troubleshoot. Maybe I can try again next week.

Yes,unfortunately is very selective about the hardware will run on.Anyway, thanks for trying.
