If that all does not work, try unmuting the Auxiliary input. I have a vague recollection of that working on some Vortex2 cards for the wavetable daughterboard.

I just got a Vortex 2 SQ2500 and installed it on my Windows 98SE machine. I moved the DreamBlaster X16GS over from my Orpheus, and my MIDI output is silent.

I've done the following:
- Verified that I've plugged it into the correct header (lol)
- I've tried the 2041 and 2048 drivers
- Unmuted all the sound output devices in the Windows Mixer, including MPU-401
- Set the MIDI device to Vortex AU8830 MPU-401 in the Multimedia control panel
- Set the DOS Box MIDI Out to Vortex AU8830 MPU-401 in the Vortex Control Panel
- Set the Analog Eq Channel to MPU-401 in the Vortex Control Panel (for the 2041 drivers only... having some issues loading the Control Panel on 2048)

Was there an OEM variant of the card that quietly disabled the WaveBlaster header maybe?

There was a little confusion, yeah. I don’t remember it taking longer than 10 minutes to figure out, so I’m not much help without access to my 98SE build at the moment.

I reckon you want the external MPU interface selected, but see if there’s another option, aside from the soft onboard wavetable. IRQ issues could crop up, might have to look at that.

Is it trying to send the MIDI through the game port instead of the waveblaster header maybe? I don't see a setting to switch between the two anywhere.

I also don't see the MPU-401 device in the IRQ list.

Only active MPU-401 need an IRQ. This was required for small but not all MT-32 games. General MIDI modules did away with the IRQ requirement.

Took a break from this and then revisited it briefly today. I used the driver CD hosted on Vogons instead of the driver packages from Phil's Computer Lab, and I didn't run into the same "corrupt package" errors that I was seeing before. No luck with the fixes we've already talked about, though.

One new thing I tried: I found an option to disable the default Aureal wavetable. Now, MPU-401 is the only MIDI option available, but I'm still not getting any sound. Boo.

Also tried going a different route and connecting the waveblaster module with USB, but alas, the XG16S doesn't work with Win9x from the sound of things. Double boo.
