I always felt like Doom was missing a proper third entry. In part because Doom just doesn't feel like Doom without Carmack and Romero. But then again, as Doom's technical achievements get further and further in the rearview mirror, Romero's contributions to the game and level design really stand out more than anything. And while yes, an actual Doom 3 really was made, and was every bit the technical achievement of it's time as prior entries were, it definitely lacked that Romero shine that, for me, makes Doom 1 and 2 eminently replayable to this day. And if you come at it from the engine perspective with Doom 1/2 being lumped together, then Doom 3, and then Doom 2016, Doom 2016 feels like a fan game. A really damned good fan game, but a fan game all the same. Is there even a single person involved in Doom 2016 from the OG id software crew?
I feel like what I really need is another 3 episode, 2.5D Doom game made by Romero, American McGee, and god damnit, even Sandy Peterson. Maybe what I really need to do is play Sigil and Sigil 2.
