Heyyo,
I just installed a GeForce 4 MX 440 in my Pentium 3 Windows 98 PC. I previously had a TNT M64 installed. I removed the drivers for the M64 and installed the card in the PC. Then I installed this driver:
https://www.vogonsdrivers.com/getfile.php?fil … &menustate=14,1
Everything seemed to go well during the installation. However, whenever Windows boots up the screen flashes to black a few times and then looks fine. I set the display settings to 800x600 and 32 colors. I have Nview set up although I'm only using one monitor and I have the settings set properly for that monitor.
I played the time demo 1 on a free demo version of Quake 3 Arena and it ran at 88 fps with no problems. I then did a time demo on Quake 2 and it ran fine with no problems and reported 60 fps.
I played Quake 2 and it looked great and ran buttery smooth. However, at a certain point the game crashed. This also crashed the entire pc and I couldn't do anything and I couldn't even ctrl alt delete.
I tried to run the game again and the game crashed, this time with an error message:

The attachment 20250201_175333.jpg is no longer available
The attachment 20250201_175339.jpg is no longer available

The pc didn't crash this time though just the game.
If there's anything I could do to prevent or resolve this issue, I would love to hear about it.
Thanks

i would run a check on your system RAM first. Make sure one of the sticks doesn't have a fault.

Shout out to LGR and PhilsComputerLab!!

Should I use memtest?

I used memtest and there were no errors in 34 passes. I did 34 because I left it on overnight 🤣
Could there be another reason why the display is flashing and why games are crashing? Is there a test for the gpu that I should do?
Thanks for your advice so far.

Did you use Display Driver Uninstaller to get rid of the previous drivers or did you just do that standard uninstall. If the later then you might try DDU, getting rid of everything, then reinstalling, its worth a shot.

Thanks for your reply. I did the standard uninstall, then went to c:/windows/inf/other and deleted the Nvidia inf files. Then I installed the new drivers. I had no idea a special uninstaller existed. Is there a specific website where I should download this utility?

Maybe that doesn't work on Win9X, maybe check out this thread and see if anything suggested there helps:

Software Like Display Driver Uninstaller for Win9X?

I'll check that thread and try to find something. However, I have kernelEx installed on the pc. Would that allow DDU to run properly on Windows 98?
