I had problems with one of my cards in a 486 too. It turned out that the MIDI portion was actually a software synthesizer and the CPU was too slow to emulate it quickly enough for smooth playback.

Try putting it in a faster machine to see if that makes a difference.

Guess you mean the Turtle Beach card. It comes with a software synth. But Yamaha is a different story, it's a hardware synthesizer. Shouldn't be to heavy on the CPU. Roland and TDK cards work perfectly on this laptop.

I can't remember exactly. I think it was the Sound Advantage or some other funny name.

I pulled it out to confirm. You're right, it was the Turtle Beach Audio Advantage. I remember being very disappointed that it didn't work well in my 486.

This card only came with a small dongle for speaker and microphone. The box advertised a larger dongle with MIDI ports, but that had to be ordered separately, so it's very much unobtainium now.

Here's a photo of my PCMCIA sound card collection. I'm missing dongles for the CF-VEW212, but it doesn't need it, since it can leverage the PC Speaker for output. I didn't receive a dongle for the .WAVjammer or the IBM 3D Sound Card when I purchased them and haven't been able to find a replacement.

I am in a similar situation, can't find the TDK MAB101 dongle, Axonix pcmcia sound cards and/or cables (have CD-ROM/audio external module only), Ego sys Wami pcmcia sound card (have external box only)

I'm very curious about the IBM 3D Sound Card. It's not the same as the IBM Audio Adapter. I haven't been able to find any information about it, including drivers, so the cable is kind of moot anyways.

I'm really surprised you don't have the dongle for the IBM 3D Sound Card as you were the one to probe it to figure out the pin-out Re: Pinout of IBM 3D PCMCIA Sound card audio cable 😁

It's a very well known and documented card. Here is official IBM page http://ps-2.kev009.com/pcpartnerinfo/ctstips/3bc2.htm
You can also check the link in my signature for drivers and the manual for it.

My memory is not the great, but I seem to recall that you've called me out on it, even in this thread, more than once. I appreciate that someone remembers the time I put into researching these things, even if it's not myself, 🤣. I think I mixed up the cards. It must be the IBM Audio Adapter then that is missing the dongle.

Ah, okay, that's what I thought 😁
I have two clones of this card Re: PCMCIA Sound Cards
These are not particularly useful cards. In DOS they work only with the audio player that comes with the cards, no games support whatsoever. The player supports wav and mid files playback. Midi samples are embedded into the driver and are of very low quality. In WIndows they support WSS and MIDI. The samble set for windows is of better quality, but still sounds not so great.
Drivers are also available on my page on archive.org

Media Vision Pro Audio card comes bundled with a variety of software applications including ExecuVoice speech recognition software from Dragon Systems; a text-to-speech synthesiser called Monologue for Windows; and a set of applications that can be used for recording and editing digital audio and controlling the playback of audio CDs in a connected CD-ROM drive.

Here is floppy image of Dragon Systems ExecuVoice 1.0:
