Hello

So maybe someone can try to help me with this topic I will be very grateful. So in general context I have a very overkill pc for windows xp gaming , why? well because Its fun for me, Am I wasting this GPU using it on this system and under windows xp? of course, but still it is fun for me 😃. Anyway with this little intro I will get into matters.

Im trying to run a game that has PhysyX as an option in the video game settings, to be more precise the game is Mafia 2 game(picked this game randomly just to try these Physyx feature). So this game (released in 2010) can actually still run in Windows XP (is the minimun operating system required to run the game) and my machine is powerful enough to run this game ( you can see my machine specs in my signature) . So Im playing this game at a resolution of 1600x900 all set to high and the physyxs option set to high as well. But running the benchmark built in the game Im getting a very dissapointing average of 16 fps. However if I turn off physysx on the game the fps jumps to a steady 60fps (I like to played with my fps capped). So my understanding is that this physyx feature is not working well at all in Windows xp 32 bit, or at least in my case.

So checking the techpower up app, i noticed that Physyx is not available in my 980ti, also when i checked the Nvidia Control Panel the Surruondings, Physysx option that is usually there does not exist or it does not appears there at all.

What I tried so far but still not working:

- I installed the Physysx version driver from nvidia 9.19
-I installed the legacy software from nvidia aswell.
-Lowered the resolution but still getting bad performance.
-I try setting physyx to medium and I get a little improvment, like around 30fps average but still not good enough for me.
- I try also installing an older version of the physyx driver but system does not let me due that there is a "newer version" of the driver itself.

I have not tried other card because I dont have any spare "out of the box" windows xp driver compatible card out there and honestly is something I will not do.

I dont know what to do a this point, know, do you think that it could be because I "forced" nvidia driver 368.81 to work with my gpu under windows xp 32 bits? by this I mean that as you all know the 980ti was not officially supported by Windows xp so I have to "tweak" the driver to be able to get it installed, is there is any other solution? or definately its the price I have to pay for having a 980ti with no access to this nvidia feature in windows xp. By the way Im using Windows XP SP3 if you are wondering.

Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

you can probably find answers to your question here: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Mafia_II (they are some nvidia physx tweaks/issues on that page).

Also, probably not relevant to your problem, but if you have 4 GB or more RAM in your computer, a 64-bit version of Windows is recommended, 32-bit version of Windows cannot use the whole 4 GB, some of them is lost/not seen.

Hardware accelerated PhysX is definitely supported by the 980Ti.

It sounds like you are running software PhysX though from the numbers you are getting. Is Physx set to the 980Ti in the Nvidia control panel?

My XP 980Ti / Titan Build is not yet put together but I could do some testing once it is. Have been DOS stuff with that build.

Thank you for the reply, I did that already but I did not find anything useful in that page, or at least nothing I can use for my specific case.

Thank you, I know this, but for my specific use that 3.5 gb of ram I have in my system is just plenny enough for me. Windows XP 64 bits is just not what I need for my retro gaming purposes.

I'm not sure Nvidia PhysX was ever supported in XP, let alone with unsupported, hacked drivers.

Thank you, that would be interesting to see, so as I said before there is no Physx option in the nvidia control panel, it should appear in the 3D setting tab but there is no option to control the PhysX. In the link below you can see a picture of how my Nvidia control panel is and how the TechPower GPU-Z reporting that there is no PhysX available for my card in this system, the version I have for the PhysX driver is 09.19.0218. Let me know when ever you can to do your test, maybe you can see something that Im missing.

Thanks again

Thats honestly what Im thinking the issue is, maybe if I throw a GTX 960 which was I belived the last GPU with working supported drivers for Windows XP maybe I could have access to PhysX feature, but I dont have this Gpu to try so I will necer know, but honestly that is somerthing Im not interested in do so.

I had no problems running PhysX games under WinXP with a GTX 970 using modified drivers 355.98.

Here's the relevant screenshot from Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter 2:

That said, some older games required an actual Ageia PhysX card (from before Nvidia bought them) and wouldn't enable PhysX without it. I doubt that's the case with Mafia 2, since it was released in 2010. But I don't own that game, so I can't test it.

Thanks for the info, how did you make it work? What verions of PhysX are you using? Maybe Mafia 2 is way to "modern" to be used in Windows XP with these feature, however I see you have the PhysX option available in you Nvidia Control Panel which in my case it doesnt. 😢 It could alse be my Nvidia driver too.

When installing the 355.98 Nvidia driver, I chose "Custom (Advanced)". There was a checkbox for "PhysX System Software", which I ticked. And that was it.

After the installation completed, PhysX just worked in any game that I tried. I didn't need to do anything else.

Thank you so much, I will try this and do a fresh reinstall of the Nvidia driver for my windows xp, its been a while since I installed it and I dont quite remember if I marked that option of Physx when I was doing it at that moment. I will try and post my result here.

Thanks again

Yeah, I was wrong. Several PhysX games actually had XP listed in the system requirements.

I did a re install of my driver enabling the physx box at the setup but still same behaviour. Gpuz for my card does not detect this feature and it does not show up in the nvdidia control panel.

Next thing I will try is to re check my nvidia inf file, maybe there is something I missed, at first I thought it was my driver version but I saw a video from philscomputer labs "How to modify drivers and use unsupported graphics cards in Windows xp" and he is using the same version as mine and when he shows his control panel I can see that he does have the PhysX control option there. So maybe Im doing something wrong, I will look into this.

There is also another way to fix this but not sure if it will work for windows xp, but I also could check on system services and see if its enable although I dont think its possible and specially with PhysX.

I will post back when I got my results.

There was an official 980Ti driver for XP. Lemme see if I can find it. Somebody had mentioned it in another thread on here.

344.11. Only 970 and 980 is listed, but that means it should be fine for the 980Ti as well.

There was an official 980Ti driver for XP. Lemme see if I can find it. Somebody had mentioned it in another thread on here.

344.11. Only 970 and 980 is listed, but that means it should be fine for the 980Ti as well.
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/details/77838/

[Strings]
DiskID1 = "NVIDIA Windows XP (32 bit) Driver Library Installation Disk 1"
NVIDIA = "NVIDIA"
NVIDIA_DEV.06C0 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480"
.
.
.
NVIDIA_DEV.13C0 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980"
NVIDIA_DEV.13C2 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970"
NVIDIA_DEV.MultiView = "NVIDIA MultiView"

The inf for the driver will need to be modded.

If should be as simple as adding:
NVIDIA_DEV.17C8 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Ti"

Then lower in the file you references for a DEV.13C0, just copy that file and add the 17C8.

This is how I modified an earlier "better" FX 5200 Win9X drivers to support the FX500. That Dev.### is the PCI device identifier.

So far not good, I checked my driver inf file and its just the same as the one I saw for Philscomputer labs but PhysX is still not available in the control panel, I think it might be my driver with my card and under this windows xp system. I will try the driver 355.98 or the 344.11 and see what happens.

Should definitely be working with a 980Ti. I initially had a pair of those in my XP-build and now running a Titan X pair. Haven't had any problems with PhysX functionality. I run modified 355.98 drivers.

There are two entries that need to be added, to the two headers/categories.

[Strings]
NVIDIA_DEV.17C8 = "NVidia GeForce GTX 980 Ti"

[NVIDIA_Devices.NTx86.5.1]
%NVIDIA_DEV.17C8% = Section008, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_17C8

Thank you for your reply, this will be very helpful for me specially because you have the same GPU as i do.

I belive that the issue could be the driver Im using, so far I tested the drivers 359.06 and 368.81 but none of those worked for me even having modified the inf file the correct way. I havent try the one you are saying, I will check it out with this 355.98 and see if I finally have access to PhysX configuration in the Nvidia control panel.

I will post as soon I got the time to test this out.

Thanks again!!

Thanks again, but unfortunately it still not working, maybe it works if I use 64 bit windows xp but still not sure, after modifing the driver version 355.98 I still get not access to configuring PhysyX in the nvidia control panel and as you can see in the pictures according to GPU-Z I dont have PhysyX available on my card. Althought on the system information I have the lastest version which is 9.19

So at this point not sure what else to do, maybe the PhysyX version from 2010 ( with the game I tested Mafia 2) does not work great on Windows XP 32 bit, I will try older games with Physyx and see how they work.

Anyway, thank you again all for the help.

Might be worth looking into the rest of the infs

Eg nv3_dispi.inf has this section
...
%NVIDIA_DEV.13BA% = Section012, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13BA
%NVIDIA_DEV.13BB% = Section012, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13BB
%NVIDIA_DEV.13BC% = Section012, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13BC
%NVIDIA_DEV.1401% = Section008, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1401
%NVIDIA_DEV.1402% = Section008, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1402
%NVIDIA_DEV.MultiView% = Section021, DISPLAY\nvMultiView
...

Which for example runs this:
[Section012.CoInstallers]
AddReg = nv_commonCoinstaller_addreg
CopyFiles = nv_coinstaller_copyfiles

Which is these:
[nv_commonCoinstaller_addreg]
HKR,,CoInstallers32,%REG_MULTI_SZ%,"nvdispgenco3235598.dll,NvGenericCoInstall"
HKR,,CoInstallers32,%REG_SZ_APPEND%,"nvdispco3235598.dll,NVDisplayCoInstall"

[nv_coinstaller_copyfiles]
nvdispco3235598.dll,nvdispco32.dll,,0x00004000
nvdispgenco3235598.dll,nvdispgenco32.dll,,0x00004000

Nvaci.inf has these sections too

%NVIDIA_DEV.139A.0963.1025% = Section016, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_139A&SUBSYS_09631025
%NVIDIA_DEV.139B.091D.1025% = Section016, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_139B&SUBSYS_091D1025
%NVIDIA_DEV.139B.0926.1025% = Section016, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_139B&SUBSYS_09261025

Which has sections like this:
[Section001]
CopyFiles = nv_Drs_copyfiles
CopyFiles = nv_cplInstallerCache_copyfiles
CopyFiles = nv_license_copyfiles
CopyFiles = nv_opencl_copyfiles
CopyFiles = nv_sysDrivers_copyfiles
CopyFiles = nv_system32_copyfiles__01
DelFiles = nv_sysDrivers_delfiles
DelFiles = nv_system32_delfiles
NVDisplayUpdateNotifyWhenAvailable = 0
NVForceClean = 1
NVOptimusHCloneDisabled = 1
NVSupportDisplayUpdate = 1
NVSupportGFExperienceExtendedOptions = 1
NVSupportGFExperienceUDA = 1
NVSupportNview = 1
NVSupportPhysx = 1
RegisterDLLs = nv_common_registerdll

NVNMI.inf has similar physx sections

Personally, I'd look for a 9600 or whatever was properly supported, and look in the files for EVERY iteration of the device id eg "139B" and... well, not just blindly copy it, but try and figure out what sections it runs.

NVNMI.inf :
HKLM,"Software\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NVTweak",PhysXShowUI,%REG_DWORD%,1

In look in regedit in HLKM\Software\NVIDIA Corporation\Global\NVTweak for the key "PhysXShowUI".
If it's doesn't exist or is 0 , create, set to 1.

I built:
