does anyone have 4gb under win 98 and a voodoo 5 pci running on the board?

i can confirm that the versions of the board without sata2 allow windows 98 to be installed via the sata 1 port. So you can avoid the use of adapters with ssds.

can anyone give me advice on overclocking a Q9550 on the board?

Aside from what other posters have mentioned, doesn't Windows 98 start to fall apart pretty fast when given more than 512 MB of RAM?

Depends on patches, "stock" requires some tweaks - but it can make to work (either by 3-rd party apps, or simply limiting RAM size to 512MB and few other things).

i can't get my Asrock 775Dual VSTA (sata1) to run stable with 4gb. i have tested 3 different DDR2 2x2 gb kits. All of them cause problems.

Which RAM can you recommend?

The errors manifest themselves with strart problems or that memresr86 freezes although it finds no errors.

With 2x 256MB DDR1 RAM there are no problems.

But I want to use Win 8.1 as well as Win98se, so I need more than 512mb...

I have to revise my statement, memtest86 crashes after a while even at 512mb...

Those boards have RAM slots of subpar quality. I’ve seen user on this forum use rubber band to hold the clips firmly in place. As boring as this advice sounds consider cleaning RAM terminals with alcohol and re-seating known good modules until you get memtest86 pass.

it runs, just with 2x4gb under win xp and i'm testing it with prime95. Thanks for the tip anyway. if it causes problems i will treat the contacts with isopropanol next.

Is it normal that the bios is so slow with pci express graphics cards?

edit:
prime is absolutely stable, I should try an older memtest86 version... I tested with 4.3.7.

Well, then the battery is probably dead 😀

I mean, these CR2032s have a tendency to be dead even before their packaging is open.

And the BIOS screen does indeed update slow on some PCIe cards. But that's due to the fact that these are newer cards. There are some older PCIe GPUs that work fine in the bios mode.

It's not only bios btw. The Windows Vista/7 pre-boot screen (if multibooting or choosing a boot mode) will also be slow.

However, everything's fine in all the DOS modes with such a card. Weird.

i imagine it was more stable with the core 2 duo, is it a problem with the quad?. The board is behaving very strangely, i will put it away for now, as i also have other projects here. It could be anything, the board itself (dry contactors) or even the power supply. I just don't have the space and time for the project. But I'll come back to it and report back!

If this special bios is just a cpu micro code update for xeon cpus, why don't you do it yourself? asrock has ami bios which is the easiest to modify.
these are the 2 micro codes for quad core xeon cpus (C0,E0 stepping)
https://github.com/platomav/CPUMicrocodes/blo … RD_8FE1A203.bin
https://github.com/platomav/CPUMicrocodes/blo … RD_A3107D75.bin

load the bios in mmtools 3.22 go to cpu patch tab, load the micro code, click apply.

It took also of time, but i finally tried it with Xeon X5355 with this board and som ASUS P5Q board (bios mod above worked great, thx), good it that its booting, but it detect wa multiplier 7.5 (because FSB 1600 instead of 800) -so it runs max like 300*7.5 - 2250 MHz,
its much slower than Q6600 and Pentium E5800 as 3.5 GHz in single thread and it could probably push it to near to 4GHz.
Question is could be multiplier unlocked and push it higher than 7.5 through some bios mode? Otherwise Xeons could be good only for 1600 MHz FSB board..

hi there, recently got 4core-dual-vsta. I have installed Windows ME with Via 4in1 4.56. Catalyst 6.2 for My X850 GTO with unlocked VP a PP (16/6). Cpu is E6700. IAM surprised by very low 3dmark 2001se score, only 20288, as opposed to my Asus P5PE-VM, which gives on same config little under thirty thousand points🥲

Issues with VIA AGP driver implementation on Win 9x. You'll get better score with PCIe X800.

which modern, quiet and inexpensive power supply can you recommend for the board for a quad + a 580 gtx?

you are in bad thread man maybe because its more general hw question, but you must remember that this particular board has 20 pin atx power connector, so you must use power supply which support this (some ps have only 24pin non detachable one). I use for example Corsair VX550, which has two pcie 8 pins if i remember corectly.
