also you need to have hyper threading disabled for twice more performance in single core applications (also in emulators/virtualizators)

also you haven't confirmed if you have haxm installed from here: https://github.com/intel/haxm/releases/tag/v7.8.0

i7 2600 doesn't support the EPT extension of VT-x.

I didn't know I needed to install HAXM. I thought QEMU had its own implementation of VT-x .

Also 😀 I don't recall your telling me to install HAXM. Maybe you did and I failed reading comprehension. That's also quite likely.

"Windows Hypervisor Platfrom" has to be disabled for haxm to work
haxm also needs to be installed first:

intel cpus work with whpx too (but whpx is slower)

@tincup said it was dated 2014. This still seems a bit early.

I've just about completed testing of all the good tracks/cars I have - CART and IRL - 1980s thru 2000s. Not bad at all. Echoing my intitial assessment a bit more than half tracks need reducing and all carsets. Not concerning myself with formation lap/race start performan hit for now. Mainly interested in seeing how complete the colection is for RR, and overall I'd say it's great.

No luck getting Mexico addon track (Mexico City, big dat 1-24-2010) running - even reduced. It's heavy but runs fine in dos/windy.

Discovered that running under dosbox-staging can help a few reluctant car/track combos (mainly indy05/indy06). Boosting dosbox.conf MemSize=128 (from 64) got all versions of Indy running with the indy05/06 car sets for instance. So tweaking dosbox does have an effect in some edge cases.

That Mexico City track works without reduction, straight off the dat. The MIPmaps take a while to load, a bit too long.

I tried it this morning. Since it worked I assumed it was the wrong track.

hmmm ...I still get the "Problem Loading Track" error.

Quick question - I've been testing with the free alpha builds as I find it easy to make/tweak standalone installs for each season skipping the launcher. I bought the retail version. Can I just copy the new dosbox/staging folders into my installs? With the app installed now can I still keep configurations local (like dgvoodoo etc)? I prefer not to rely on the system-wide app. Also how do updates work now? I didn't see an option to download as a zip - it just self-installed.

EDIT: the 2 earlier versions of Mexico run, but they are sort of betas. Still can't open the third upgraded version (1-24-2010 dat). However since I have everything unpacked I've been manually "upgrading" the 2nd version with better grass etc by copying mips. - And yes, as Pavel mentioned it's not the correct CART layout - it lacks the turns at the back end that bypass the first part of the big 180. But it's not bad.

EDIT 2: the patched INDYCAR.exe seems to have pepped up FPS across the board which is great. Plus I increased conf memsize=512 per your rec (if I understood you right).

Thanks for buying a copy. For every store release there should be a matching Alpha release.

You can manually update the files. Just copy dosbox.exe, dosclient.exe, redline.dll and verite.dll and all the other dlls. For staging copy dosbox-staging.exe and the other files. Staging also needs all the files in the staging subdrectory. Staging belongs in the staging subfolder if you're running it through RLauncher.

If you're updating it manually, update the app from the store and copy the files across.

If you're updating it through RLauncher.exe, update it from the Microsoft Store, run rlauncher, launch Dosbox-Rendition, close it then run dosbox-staging-rendition, close it and that's it. RLauncher copies the files across to the execution folder every time an app's launched. It's a bit cumbersome, but it exists because earlier builds of the app had a habit of dying unexpectedly and locking the files, which meant the machine would have to be rebooted to run it again.

If you run it through RLauncher and the files are locked, it'll renamed all the files and then copy the files across before launching.

The config for the wrapper itself is in rendition.cfg, which should be in the same folder as dosbox.exe (or staging). Dosbox-rendition.config and dosbox-staging.config are the arein %localappdata%\temp and is (unless overriden by the command line passed on dosbox launch) are global and unaffected by updates. Some settings may change from version to version, but will only be done if there's a clear improvement in doing that for nearly all systems.

Could you share your copy of the later Mexico City track? The version I tried (https://icr2.net/forum/showthread.php?tid=601 … id=3928#pid3928) appears to work. With the current store release (1.0.40 if you look in settings\apps) memsize is forced to 512 MB and ignored. I've got versions which lock 1.5 GB of RAM and patched versions of ICR2 which can use 1.2 GB of texture heap (system RAM). Larger values don't seem to be possible. With a larger texture heap, ICR2 does in fact allow much larger textures to be used at slower frame rates, ridiculously slow frame rates .

Yeah it doesn't work. I think I messed up copying the track across.

I have no idea what's wrong with this one.

Dhrystone 2 benchmark QEMU i7 2600 with HAXM (Win10):

Microseconds for one run through Dhrystone:0.74
Dhrystones per Second: 1360544
VAX MIPS rating = 774.36

Windows Hypervisor Platform on my Win10/i7 2600:

Time for loop iteration 0.33 ms
Dhrystones 3065134
VAX MIPS 1744.xx

i7 12600 VMWare WIn98 under Win10:

Microseconds 1 loop: 0.32
Dhrystones / second: 3100775
VAX MIPS rating: 1764.81

WHP/VMWare appears to be faster for this old CPU.

Intel HAXM appears to be discontinued.

No thank you. And no watermark now haha. I basically got it down after I figured out how/where files were being installed and sorted it out. For some reason working with the alpha was easier for me - but now it's done. Thanks for the upgrade notes - saved for reference.

From the start my setup has been a separate folder for each season. In the folder there's a game subfolder, and an RReady dosbox subfolder. Dosbox launch .bats in the season folder all relative pathed so I can move/rename the season folder without issue. For upgrading I've been making a new RREADY subfolder and swapping out each install.
ICR2R1995 (Season folder)
- ICR2R (the complete came/tracks/cars etc)
- RREADY (dosbox/your stuff/conf/cfg)
dosbox.bat
dosbox-staging.bat

20 in all...

What I'm finding now is that reducing some carsets is not strictly necessary - but still makes sense for decent FPS. So all the work was actually worth it. I may revist tracks with noticeable terrain popping and see if they can be returned to unreduced. But it's so carset sentitive I'm inclined to let good enough alone.

And Mexico City is go:
This track wouldn't reduce with
tredit <path to unpack dat dat> -reduce -convert <output folder>

It needed this version of TREdit:
https://nirvtek.com/downloads/TREdit.20250406.001.7z
MD5: bb57f14e880ffe665168b9b5106f88c6

used with the command line:
TREdit.exe <path to unpacked dat> -reduce -maxmips <maximum number of mipmaps per texture> -convert <output path>

e.g.
TREdit.exe c:\temp\mexicodat -reduce -maxmips 5 -convert c:\temp\mexicoreduce

(Apologies to Vogon tincup, I should have figure this out sooner)

Mexico City (Max 5 mip maps per texture) Now Rendition Ready:

That worked. I posted the score. It's similar to the vmware result. The Intel specific path, haxm, is slow.

The ryzen only works with the last option, emulated mode, not even with whpx.
