I also scored a bundle containing a MSI 848P, 3GHz Northwood (30 cap EE reject), 2x1GB Mem, and most importantly, a working Radeon 9800XXL. The CPU had some bent pins, but I got it working again. Tops out at 3.65GHz@1.625V on my ABIT IC7G.

I didn't, it's mounted by gravity 😁
Should be an NHD-14 which absolutely does not fit on 478 boards of you try and mount it properly.

For a quick OC Test this is always great though.

Ok, as I really did wonder about that, and looked up Noctua coolers for socket 478, and actually FOUND a SINGLE one they had, but nowhere to be found for sale:

Many modern coolers' mounting brackets are really rather simple to modify (mutilate) to fit 478 as long as there is sufficient space around the socket. LGA115x and LGA1200 have 75mm x 75mm mounting hole spacing while S478 is 59,44mm x 76,2mm I believe. Just a few additional holes to the bracket can be all that's needed.

Unfortunately, it died right during the demonstration the seller was giving me. The picture collapsed into a single vertical, noisy, white blinking stripe, and some magic smoke appeared inside the monitor.
The seller was very kind, so I ended up taking the monitor for free. I’ll try to disassemble it, see what may have caused the issue, and attempt to repair it.

Any hopes for this one?

Bought it already some time ago for only a handfull of coins, but put it aside right after delivery and seeing it's main feature (wasn't visible in the advertisement pics):

Not sure how that could happen and also not how to fix it. Haven't powered it on yet but pretty sure it won't live up with a smile...

My wild guess would be horizontal output transistor... probably because of tired caps... so maybe a half dozen or so components to replace. Make sure anything you are assured is "equivalent" can handle the amps.

What I suggested involved a reballing machine and a replacement 693A chip. No way anyone would be able to fix that chip as is.

I'm not sure if it broke the solder balls from beneath, but it does look like it tore the vias from above.

Oh yea, you don't get that kind of ball removal without a lot of tearing.

Id use hot air to remove the chip and get a sit-rep of what's going on underneath. You might be extremely lucky and not have significant pad/via damage.

A while back I bought an HP Kayak XU 7/550. Upon inspecting I was in for an unpleasant surprise cause there was an XA (single processor) board fitted.
I really wanted to restore the system so this unit came in. Banana P3B-F for scale.

Did a first visual inspection yesterday, see details here. Once the main PCB was cleaned, I found two burned resistors: R195 and R205. All other components look fine — no leaky capacitors or other visibly damaged elements. Will check the nearby transistors for sure.

The balls itself should be ok as far as can be seen. It's mainly the most upper layer of the package that was lifted.
