I'm having a bit of trouble getting the sound configured on this game.

I'm installing from a CD image of my original boxed copy (the machine doesn't have an optical drive). The install all goes smoothly, when it gets to sound configuration the SB16 is detected correctly and can play both digital and music tests fine. If, however, I choose General MIDI from the music device list, set the correct port for my MPU401 interface OR my DB50 clone via the SB16 waveblaster header and then test it, the machine locks without anything appearing on the lcd of my SC55 module.

This is bizarre, I've not seen any test that uses the midi port actually lock the machine... and in fact the same install and sound configuration procedure using my X-Wing Collectors CD works fine.

Has anyone experienced problems with midi configuration with this version of Tie Fighter before?

(PS. This is obviously real dos on real hardware)

What's your SC55 attached to, is it on the same sound card as your daughterboard?

I had lockups in ROTT and a couple of other games when trying to use an XR385 daughterboard and an SC55 attached to the same sound card. Removing the SC55 seemed to resolve it.
Kind of a pain in the arse because if you want to have both MIDI devices in your machine you need seperate sound cards with seperate IO ports for each MIDI controller, rather than just having them all run off one card and muting the device you aren't using.

If you are squeamish, don't prod the beach rubble.

I'm using a 100% MPU401 compatible Midiman MM401 using the standard MIDI port 330h with the MT32 and SC55 attached to it - the XR385 is mounted on the SB16 which is jumpered to 300h so that both MIDI interfaces are completely seperate and I can use either of them without having to remove or recable anything.

No problems seen with any other games - I just installed a few new games over the weekend: the aforementioned XWing and Tie Fighter Collectors CD versions, Descent 1 & 2 and Albion. All of them work with every combination of my sound cards (either of the GUS or SB16 for effects and music, or either of the GUS or SB16 and one any of the 3 MIDI 'modules': XR385/MT32/SC55) - apart from Tie Fighter, which locks the configuration screen when I test the General MIDI selection (either using the SB16 300h port, or the Midiman using 330h)

Hello! Sorry for necro-ing, but couldnt find anyone else with the same issue i'm facing with Tie fighter! Could you find a fix? Same thing happens on dark forces.

I do believe the board has details on fixing this issue, but since the mods have not locked this yet and you have trouble finding the specific fix - you would be looking for Dark Forces Dechacker tool. The same group offers general MIDI patcher for IMUSE if you look around. I think mentioned somewhere on this board was also a quick fix for Tie Fighter specifically, that was made using DFORCEDH patched IMUSE as reference.

I remember the sound setup program for this game being speed sensitive. Like speeds above 600MHz triggers an issue.
