First off this is my PC.

ASRock P4i65G Socket 478 Motherboard with Intel 865G Chipset (8X AGP Slot)
P4 2.4GHz Socket 478 Northwood CPU 800Mhz FSB
Nvidia GeForce 4 TI 4600 (128mb RAM) (with v45.23 drivers)
Sound Blaster Live! 5.1, Model SB0100
512MB (2 X 256MB) DDR400 (PC3200) Dual Chanel RAM
IIYAMA LS704U Vision Master 1403 CRT Monitor
Windows 98SE

I am having an issue with Half-Life. I am running the CD based retail big box version with patch v1.1.1.0 (I have also tried the unofficial 1.1.1.2 patch). FRAPS is reporting that the game is running at 72 FPS, my understanding is that the old retail version was capped at 72 FPS. However the perceived FPS that I am experiencing (at least to my eye) is more like 20 FPS. It's running very jerky and juddery.

I had a similar issue with Unreal until I applied the OpenGlDrv patch here, https://oldunreal.com/downloads/unreal/other-patches/ I was wondering is there something similar I can use for Half-Life that corrects this issue?

I have tried:

1. Applying the unofficial 1.1.1.2 patch.
2. Turning off (and on) vSync in the nVidia control panel.
3. Tried DirectX and Glide
4. Disabling sound

I have had a good read through various threads here about similar problems running this game but nothing seems to apply to my specific problem. I would very much appreciate any help with this.

Thank you.

My System: ASRock P4i65G MB, Win98SE, P4 2.4GHz, 512MB Ram, Nvidia GeForce 4 TI 4600, Sound Blaster Live! 5.1

Did you try "r_mmx 1"? That can help a smidge.

Thank you, do I type that in the console?

Indeed. Take a look at the other console commands, so you can play with different settings. The one I suggested can often squeeze a few extra frames out of the system, but you have to enable it in the command console or the executable shortcut, as an extension.

Appreciate your help, the thing is I don't think it is a performance thing, like I say FRAPS is reporting 72FPS, there is something else going on here I think.

Does GLQuake experience similar issues? Or is that fine?

I've not tried that game yet, I will give it a go and report back

r_mmx won't do a thing.

As you're on 98se, how's your mouse sampling rate? m_filter probably would help in the meantime.

As it's a CRT, is the monitor running at a interlaced refresh rate?

72fps is likely the frame rate of something else that is output on the screen. Often times, different components run at different frames and Fraps can report only one of them at a time.

Intro videos are an example, some run at 15fps but display 60fps

Not sure how I would test that, thing is I experience the stuttering even when just moving along using the keyboard and not touching the mouse. I don't think my monitor is using interlaced. Other games like Unreal work fine, butter smooth even with mouse movement.

Getting the same issue (not quite as bad but noticeable) with GLQuake. It only seems to happen with OpenGL games, DX games are fine. Do you think I have a driver issue? I am using 45.23 nVidia drivers. Like I say Unreal is fine with OpenGL but I had to use the OpenGlDrv patch here, https://oldunreal.com/downloads/unreal/other-patches/.

FRAPS is also reporting a high 72fps frame rate for GLQuake, but it's still jerky and juddery.

It's got to be a drive issue, hasn't it?

CD playback not returning any tracks can do performance stalling sometimes

hmm, it sound like you may be caught in a resonance cascade

(sorry 😀 )

Try stopping fraps and instead use half life built-in frame rate counter, in the console:

cl_showfps 1

Alternatively,

net_graph 1

shows FPS along with some other bits.
I've had weird issues with fraps when used with some opengl games and win98.

Exactly what I thought but I'm seeing predictable phase arrays.
