Darkseed (1992) runs in 640x350 16 colours due to H. R. Giger's demand. Quite unusual for an adventure game at the time. Still looks great for today's standards.

Interestingly I remember the graphic mode description from the original wfw3.11 Standard Video drivers:
640x480x16colors = VGA (ok with 256kb Video RAM)
640x480x256colors = SVGA (from 512kb Video RAM)
800x600x16colors= SVGA (ok with 256kb Video RAM)

To me early is everything DOS before 1994, so EGA Hi Res and VGA-16 color are most likely suspects, after Windows 95 it’s sort of moot
