I don't know if I just need to study the basics of computers again, if there's something I'm failing to grasp, or some other underlying issue going on, but I seem to be having problems getting my HDDs set up correctly. Since re-setting everything up with the new motherboard and ATX case, I noticed that my first two HDDs were configured wrong. My C and D drives were connected up using IDE 2 and were labelled Secondary Master and Secondary Slave. I've since connected them to IDE 1 so they're Primary Master and Primary Slave, but now Windows fails to load and tells me there's an issue with the disks. I figured I was setting the jumpers up wrong, but after multiple experiments, I'm sure I'm understanding the diagrams correctly and they're set up right. If I just have the C drive connected, it works. And Windows boots as normal. Once my D drive is added though - fail. The initialisation recognises them correctly - Maxtor 30GB = C and Samsung 80GB = D.
So, someone, please correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I understand, my C drive diagram is showing...
...which, to my understanding means that if the jumper is at the top and horizontal, it's the Slave. If it's vertical and on the bottom left, it's the Master, right? Which is what I have set up:
And as mentioned, Windows has loaded up when that HDD is plugged in. However, when I try to add my D drive - the Samsung - this is the diagram:
And to my understanding, the jumper needs to be vertical and the second one along...? Like so:
But I just get this every time:
No other devices are connected except my flash floppy drive. My third HDD isn't and neither is my CD-ROM drive. The red cable on the IDE ribbon is on the right side when I plug them in and I've made sure the molex and IDE connectors are pushed in all the way. I've tried resetting the BIOS to default and tried getting the BIOS to detect the drives. Usually when I do that they just disappear again and don't detect anything. Or they detect them in the right order on reset, but then go no further. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? Thanks.
