Great! I have plans for a C2D build too. I never had one back in the days (I had an A64 then a Phenom 🤮) I'll do it if i find a working 2nd 8800gtx.

What motherboard do you plan to use for this build ?

AM2+ Phenom II X4 3.2Ghz performs very close to s775 E8600. See Re: Any love for AM2? . There is no matching dual core from AMD from that era.

Not sure if SLI is worth it, based on experience of other people it is a mixed bag Re: Socket 939 dual core build. Decisions, decisions.... . SLI setup frequently does well in synthetic benchmarks but offers very small benefit in games.

Pentium III 900E,ECS P6BXT-A+,384MB,GeForce FX 5600, Voodoo 2,Yamaha SM718
Athlon 64 3400+,Gigabyte GA-K8NE,2GB,GeForce GTX 275,Audigy 2 ZS
Phenom II X4 955,Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3,8GB,GeForce GTX 780
Phenom II X6 1100,Asus 990FX,32GB,GeForce GTX 980 Ti

Think this describes SLI perfectly.
but SLI setups would have been considered the "finest" in 2005 and now the hardware is much more affordable I'd say Whynot even if somewhat useless.
Much like most of us put in loads more ram then we had at the time or will ever need.

I'm probably a bit unfair to AM2+ systems.
I got a Phenom 1 very late (Sept 2009) when i was as a student. My previous system died and i needed a PC to study. With a very small budget.
I still have the list and prices of what i ordered. Of course it was not great. But for less than 350€ incl. shipping i could not have had something better.
Not the adequate conditions to experience the best of AM2/3+

I gathered some parts and i will probably give it another try. A friend gave me A Phenom II 3X BlackEdition. Having "3X" and "BlackEdition" in the same product name looks interestingly weird..

I agree to both of you for the SLI.
It's just i always wanted one. Same thing for 4 GPU systems. It's ridiculous and will never exist again. So experiencing it is special.

Despite the weird count, some games actually benefit from 3 cores in Windows Vista era. The main problem of X3 is lower clock speed, usually below 3 Ghz. You should be able to get Phenom II X4 945/955 3.0/3.2Ghz very cheap, nobody wants them. Perfect for AM2+. AM2+ motherboards are also super cheap now. GeForce GTX 670/770 is a perfect match for it, again nobody wants it and very cheap.

I had x3 720 BE back then and still have it. This were insanely good value with a bit of luck back then - mine unlocked to x4 and overclocked to 3.2Ghz without increasing voltage.

I've used it overclocked to 3.6Ghz back then with slightly increased voltage, then when the system was retired i had to use simpler cooler and dropped it to 3.2Ghz with default voltage...

We have this very much in common.
"stupidest" computer I built had 2 CPU's, Quad Crossfire and even 2 PSU's
My Win7/XP build with 2 CPU 16 thread's, 4 GPU crossfire, 2 PSU build
In the end I swapped out the video for a more sensible single GF GTX 780, even for me that was a bit over the top.

I still have 2 Quad SLI builds (a dual GTX 590 and a dual 7950 GT2 build)
a dual crossfire HD 4890 build on a dual socket workstation.

Not to mention my dual P3 with Voodoo 2 SLI. Its more about the technology then the actual performance
