If your output window isn't opengl, it will work sure. As mentioned it will be pretty slow on updates though.
Since it runs on just about any platform you can think of, why would you want to do this?

It works fine here, running dosbox on my old celeron linux machine with a windows X server. As long as it's not a fullscreen 70 fps updating game it can work pretty decently 😀
