hi all
I've downloaded flight simulator version 3 dos copy and I'm trying to get it to work on
my windows 98 pc but every time I try and run it it says program to big to fit in memory
I've tried increasing my virtual memory but that hasn't made any difference although
I must admit I'm not Shure whether I did it wright does any one know how to fix this problem or a way around it
I've taken a image of the version of flight simulator I'm trying to use to show you all.

You need to increase your conventional memory. If you type in mem, you can see how much is available. The manual should tell you how much you need.

Yeah, I just found and played with my original FS3 floppy - Ran it fine under DosBox (which has lots of conventional memory),
and a DOS5 machine which doesn't keep a lot of extras ... Don't know how much conventional memory W98 takes, try booting W98
directly to DOS (don't even start WinBlows) and see if it runs.

Just booted up Win98 in PCEM
- Under Win98 -> DOS prompt = 605k free
- Restart in MS-DOS mode = 606k free
(Looks like W98 loads itself mostly into extended)

Booting MS-DOS5 in PCEM:
- Largest executable program size: 627040 (612k assuming k=1024)
(Not a whole lot more than Win98 - I don't know what FS needs)

hi all I've given memmaker a try and tried extending conventional memory as well as expanded memory but it doesn't seem to make any difference this is on my 486 pc but I'm not Shure
how to run memmaker on my windows 98 pc so I wasn't able to try on my windows 98 pc.
I tried typing memmaker in dos mode on my windows 98 pc but nothing happened.

Memmaker doesn't exist in Windows 98 because managing conventional memory became a thing of the past when running 32-bit Windows applications. Are you running FS3 from within Windows or after you exit to DOS mode? Can you provide the output of mem.exe here for us to see?

Ok, I just fired up flight sim V3 under Win98 (native - not booted in DOS mode) running in PCEM

It started and ran fine.

"mem" shows "Largest executable program size 605k"

Then I wrote "usemem" - a program to allocate nK of memory and then run a program:

A:\FLTSYM> usemem 300 mem
shows "Largest executable program size 297k"

A:\FLTSYM> usemem 300 FS3
Loaded and ran FS3 jsut fine as well!

So, It looks like the 256k requirement mentioned earlier in this thread is accurate!

What does MEM show on your system?

If >256k, the problem may not be amount of memory - what EXACTLY is the error message you get?

The problem is much more likely to be too much free memory instead of too little, because there was no HMA or UMBs or MemMaker and such at the time, and also the majority of systems probably still had at most 512 KB, so it was very uncommon for people to have so much free memory in the first place.

You could also try LOADFIX

Possibly, but I ran FS3 under a fresh/bare install of W98 where MEM showed 605k free (I expect quite close to the maximum you can have) with no probs.

This is from a original Ms FS3 diskette that I bought new "back in the day".

I'm thinking something else installed on the system may be causing a conflict of some sort.
Have you tried running it in "Restart in MS-DOS" mode?
