When did Unreal Tournament multiplayer get so "difficult"?

oeswapi's comment just basically reminds me why they invented skill-based matching for modern online multiplayer games. It's no fun if someone you're playing with is so far above you that they'll automatically win every time. UT99's weakness in modern times is that you have to match up with players yourself - and that is much more easily done in a satisfying way when everyone knows the other players, over LAN or private server.

I can identify with the OP. I'd rather have a good time playing than do all this insane tweaking and training just so I can win. Winning is fun, but all fun ain't the winning.

This. I don't necessarily want to win every game/match, but I also don't want to be locked down so hard that I can't do anything without dying every few seconds. That's not my idea of fun.

Me, I'm over here trying to play through original DOOM and DOOM II on Ultra-Violence for the first time in my life (keyboard only) and I'm struggling hard.

Why torture yourself? Just use the mouse! It makes the game so much more enjoyable.

id (specifically John Romero, who has talked about it) intended the game to be played with keyboard+mouse, as the opening demo shows, and the best players back in the day did indeed use the mouse:

Haha, I know. And I do enjoy using the mouse in the newer ports like GZ Doom. My idea was to play it exactly like I used to when I was a kid, keyboard only. I'm not really sure why we didn't use the mouse back then; either we didn't know we could, or there was something wrong with our config. Who knows, I was like 8 years old.
