I finally managed to source out a decent psu with the fan at the back.

You probably noticed in the pics a black psu, and although brand new it s period incorrect.

Just got a antec 80 plus 380w psu with the fan at the back, as it was meant.

Still overkill but that fan position makes all the difference.

Oooo.. And also look what I got in the post...

Full on diablo 2 original cd s...

But thee advantage of an FX5600 is DX9 and the ability to run Glide wrappers with it.

FX series are very poor in DX9, so it cannot be used in practice. For very old glide games the performance may be sufficient.

You are not using P4 CPU power connector and the PSU is rated only 130W for 5+3V. I would say not a good choice. That PSU is for boards with P4 connector only. I looked at my old unused PSUs, and there is a 350W one with 30A 5V rail and total load 185W for 5+3V. It also has P4 connector.

I reverted , I went for a normal run of the mill 300w psu with fan at back.

TBH , works the same.

Pretty sure you don't need the grunt to use Dx9 with wrappers for old APIs like Glide.
That's the point of it.

For actual Dx9 games? I would get a more recent GPU, like I did for my XP build: An HD6970, with a GTX 560 Ti as a backup.

Boring specs, bad OS, no cable management, upper ODD color mismatch. A 2hr quick build without anything special.

But Yeah, still a machine s1 can have Fun with 🖖

Live long and prosper!

Yes , it s boring. I do not give a rats axx about cable management nor the color mismach.

As for the os... well... win me is much better suited than 98. I never ever use real dos mode , win me is much faster and I have never had a dos game that will not run in win me.

Also , I have combined my firt retro pc and my second retro.

The socket 370 p3 , i have dismantled and the mb , ram , cpu and cooler went on ebay as a combo. I did keep the case and moved the socket 462 into it. I now have only 3 retro pcs insted of 4. I do have quite a few parts for sale as trying to downsize.

As en experience... the more rare and non boring socket 370 with abit mobo and p3 was totally useless. just like win 98. Very slow build. Yes , very retro , but don t really care about that. The socket 462 is much better , quicker , easier to manage and win me is super fast compared to win 98.

All i need in the end is a win 9x machine. And i chose the faster one.

Windows Millenium should work fine with up to 1GB RAM, up from 512MB limit of Windows 98. Your systems were too close apart, so if you don't need DOS then Athlon XP is a better choice than PIII. That Abit board had VIA chipset which is not a good choice for PIII anyway.

Athlon XP with 9x kernels was fast, I kept using it until 2003. It wasn't great with Windows XP due to low ram capacity available at the time.

It's probably best not to have more than 2 retro systems or they end up not being used. PIII/P4/AthlonXP/Athlon64 and s775/AM2(+)/AM3(+)/1155/1156/1366 for later games.

I found out that the hard way...

but there is a reason for thjat via chipset. As the 462 socket has the same chipset.

It supports DDMA for my ess solo 1 sound card.

Overall , you right , the athlon xp is a much better experience than the p3.
