ultimate win98 video card for asus asus tusl2-c

Got myself a neat asus tusl2-c mainboard with a tualtin celeron 1,3 mhz cpu. I want to turn it into an high end win98se gaming rig for years 1998 to 2001.

Which gpu would be quite powerful for win98se but still ballanced for my mobo chipset and the gpu?

The usual suspects, gf3, geforce 4, or the radeon 7,8 or 9 series or something entirely else?

and do I need to add some more ram to maximese the board? I have 256mb pc 133 ram for the time being. I think in win98se I could use up to 512 mb is that correct?

Geforce FX 5200 (128bit) would be next good step that you have not mentioned.

Thanks for the information. Yes I have not considered the fx series yet. i am open to ther sugggestons though so I will geforce fx 5200 out.

I'm doing something similar with a Dell Dimension 4100, though it's a little too old to get in on Tualtin. I went with a Radeon 9600XT 128MB card, once I dealt with a dying GPU fan it seems to be working well so far. I haven't exactly put it through its paces yet though.

512 MB is the maximum for RAM in Windows 98SE without modification/patch, the general recommendation is to stick to 512 MB or less. 384-512 MB will be good.

On my Tualatin I have Geforce 4 MX 460. Basically an ultimate DirectX 7 build. Though that's only good for games up to about 2000. If you want 2001 games, then that means directX 8.x support is required. Which means at least a Geforce 4200 or Radeon 8500.

Edit, sorry, geforce 3 is also directx 8.x

Thanks a lot for the information about the ram. The radeon card is on my short list among the top pics aus well. It should serve my plans well.

thx for your reply as well. And as far as i know the gf3 already supports directx. but you have a point for sure that for the ultimate directx experience I should look towards the geforce 4 or radeon 8 or 9 series.

I need to dig deeper first befor making my final call of there are any knowm compability issues with that series of cards for win98se.
