I just tried using Manty's Sound Blaster Pro Remote Control utility and I'm completely lost. Despite reading the readme and using the /? switch, I'm still confused with how you're supposed to activate and control the volumes. It says you press the HotKey (either A or ( for Alt or Ctrl) + Shift + PLUS and MINUS. Where do you do this exactly? Anywhere and at any time in DOS? Because when I tried nothing happened. Nothing happened in a game either. Or do you press A? Or (? Or do you type the name of the utility - SBPVOL.COM - and then A + Shift + PLUS? And how do you adjust the individual mixer options? Press M for Master Volume? Or type M1, M2, M3 etc? And can you only adjust the individual mixer options after you've activated the utility? Just with F1 and F2, F5 and F6 etc.? Things just aren't very clear to me at all. 🙁

Thanks

The utillity does two things

1) Set various SB Pro mixer settings via command line only
2) Change the SB Pro master volume with Ctrl+Numpad Plus and Ctrl+Numpad Minus

The default modifier key is Ctrl unless you used A command line option to change the activation key to Altm which would make the hotkeys Alt+Numpad Plus and Alt+Numpad Minus

Since the program is written for a genuine creative sound blaster pro, it's unclear how compatible it would be with other brand cards

I see. I hope it does work as it would be useful. Though I believe it was suggested in the Yamaha Bug Fix thread. It was how I came across it. Yamaha YMF71x SB Pro Mixer Bug Issue Fix

So, just to be clear, I would need to type in the utility's name and then type in Ctrl after it? Or just press it? I did try a couple of combinations after running the utility, but nothing appeared to change. I'm still not quite clear on the individual mixer controls though. They're listed with letters, such as M for Master, but then there's mention of F1, F2 etc. It says Left Shift is for the left channel and Right Shift for the right channel, but I'm not quite clear on what it is for both at the same time...?

I haven't used my retro pc in a a couple years now but in an old batch file I found that I loaded it as

Sbpvol.com N

Then I would spam the following commands a few times

LeftCtrl-LeftShift-Num+
LeftCtrl-LeftShift-F8

Win 11 - Intel i7-1360p - 32 GB - Intel Iris Xe - Cubilux 7.1 USB

Hey, thanks. I'll give that a try and report back. 😀 What's the N switch though? I can't see anything about that in the readme.

The version I found was on internet archive and was older, the one on vogons has much more keyboard commands

Ctrl+Shift+NUMPAD PLUS Master Down
Ctrl+Shift+NUMPAD MINUS Master Up

Ctrl+Shift+F1 Master Down
Ctrl+Shift+F2 Master Up
Ctrl+Shift+F5 Digital FX Down
Ctrl+Shift+F6 Digital FX Up
Ctrl+Shift+F7 FM Down
Ctrl+Shift+F8 FM Up
Ctrl+Shift+F9 Line Down
Ctrl+Shift+F10 Line Up
Ctrl+Shift+F11 CD Down
Ctrl+Shift+F12 CD Up

Ctrl+LShift+F3 Microphone Down
Ctrl+LShift+F4 Microphone Up

Ctrl+RShift+F3 Lock left/right volume
Ctrl+RShift+F4 Unlock left/right volume

In unlocked mode, left shift and right shift adjust the left and right channels separately, except for the microphone

Ctrl+Shift+U Choose ADC input source
Ctrl+Shift+E Choose ADC filter
Ctrl+Shift+O Toggle output DAC to mono or stereo
Ctrl+Shift+S Toggle outout DAC filter

If it's working you should see the keyboard lights change temporarily to show the status

Ahhh. Awesome. Thank you. 😀 I'll give that a try in a sec. I can't imagine my keyboard will light up though, unless you mean the Num and Capslock lights...?

Hmm. Sadly, it's not working still. I've run the utility, and learnt that N is Normal mode (whatever that is exactly), but trying the key combinations in a game isn't working. Not for Master volume or CD.

Yes those are the lights on a keyboard 😀

The app temporarily changes the status lights to reflect the selected mode or volume, you can see a description of the status lights in the readme

Ah, okay. So far nothing has changed with the lights. Though I'm guessing I need to set the key combos in a batch file...? Nothing in the readme suggested that though. Also did a search in the readme for 'lights', but it turned up nothing. The version I'm using is 4.01 from 1998.

Okay, not sure what I did differently, if anything, but now the lights are changing! 😀

Is it possible the Yamaha card wasn’t initialized before? The app wouldn’t have been able to communicate with the card in that case

Oh no, it was. As I'd loaded up a game beforehand, which had a BAT command to initialise it first. But thanks for your help; it's sorted now. 😀
