Stupid question, but are you sure you arent hitting the 'ISA BUS is too slow' problem?

What is the ISA CLK of this system?

No, because i have other non accelerated IA cards, that even are more crap than the 8900D and work fine in windows 3.1, slow but razonable

I use isa at stock speed, 8mhz

I have a CL 5422 and this is amazing, very very fast in 286+win3.1, but i think this one maybe have some windows acceleration...

I assume this is the same driver pack that is everywhere

Sadly yes, thanks

Funny think, T640.DRV is the 640x480x8bits driver, if I load windows using this driver in 286 25mhz is pretty slow, VERY SLOW, but i load same windows install, standard mode (not enhaced) in a crappy 386 SX25 ... windows run fine, slow, but fine

I think just trident did not care at all of 286 users back on time, and never update the driver, just for 386 users

By early 90s, the 286 ATs were always a bit ridiculed, I think.
Like that they're merely better wordprocessor PCs.
800x600 in 16c was the norm here, I think, hence the old stock Super VGA driver.

In graphics cards business, high color depths and resolutions were a thing.
The drivers were optimized for 386 Enhanced-Mode of Windows 3.x.
The VXDs allowed a lot of things that were important for being competivive performance-wise.

So yeah, the 286 users were always left a bit stranded.
For then-new multimedia, the 386SX was beim proclaimed, rather.
The revised MPC-1 specification replaced the 286 by an 386SX.

Perhaps that's why graphics card manufacturers focued on 386/486 mainly.
In their business, excellent performance on 386/486 mattered the most.

The 286-compatible drivers for Trident cards is one of the slowest drivers in general compared to other ISA cards that run at the full ISA bus speed. The post of mine that Grzyb linked are the best drivers you will find for a 286.

Even then, the 386 driver files for Trident TVGA8900 cards doesn't even work properly, and I've tried four different driver versions - it's possible it may require a system with less than 16MB of system RAM.

So, did you already try Microsofts generic "SVGA 640 x 480 256 colors" driver? If that driver works, I don't see what a TVGA8900D driver can improve over the generic one.

The Microsoft 256 colour SVGA drivers requires a 386 to function - only the 800x600x16 colour driver works with a 286.

Which is why I mentioned that drivers have been ported In the past (1999 era bravenet forums) from 386 class win3.11 to 286 win3.1.

Not generic svga but it certainly shouldn’t be a large bridge to backport 8900d support into generic svga let alone 286 class instruction base for the correct resource.

One could ask on one of the beta forums and someone might be helpful
