Good day,

I have built an AMD k6-iii+ computer which includes an IDE to CF card. I Built it using a 8GB CF card which was properly detected by the BIOS with automatic LBA parameters. Windows 98SE installed great, all good.

Now I want to reinstall from scratch on a 32GB CF card. Once again, the BIOS autodetects it fine, with its LBA parameters. The Win 98SE installer runs fine until it does the surface scan. It asks me if I am sure the LBA parameters are correct... twice. I say yes, it runs the scan but nearing the end it starsts marking bad blocks. Eventually fails and I can't install.

Back to the 8GB card, all works fine, can run disk scan, no issues.

I have tested it from my modern linux machine and the CF card works perfectly there: tested with badblocks and also F3 to check that the advertised size is real (F3 tests for flash fraud https://fight-flash-fraud.readthedocs.io/en/s … able/index.html)

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Do an fdisk /mbr, boot from the cd in dos (don't start installation), run fdisk, delete any existing partitions and then try to create a 32gb partition. Are you able to do so? If so then also format it and retry setup, but i suspect you won't.

Well, I am surprised... but that did work! Thanks @konc

Glad to hear, so most probably you only needed the /mbr
