I compiled that version of glquake.
The source is IDtech release, a bit newer then what most people runt I think. There are visual differences at least for me like gamma.
I have not modified the source so any changes are IDtech changes.
But anyways, I downloaded the patch from the site to my Compaq Presario 5000, Athlon 800 with a Matrox G400 just in case it got corrupted on the server.
Then I did a fresh Quake1 install from a CD image and when it asked if I wanted glquake istalled too I selected yes then I selected no on the 3dfx question becsue there is no Voodoo card in that machine.
After that I tested if the game started, and it did and the console sad version 0.95 so so a bit old.
Did a quick benchmark, 180fps.
Then I droped in my 480KByte patch and the game started fin again with the quake logo before the game goes full screen.
Game ran fine and benchmarked 187fps, not the biggest gain, in fact my Via C3 1200 saw some of the best gain I seen, 11%, I did mess around with this patch a few weeks ago when that CPU arrived from ebay.
Idk why its not starting for you but I only know two people that have run that patch, me and my friend. But we have a LAN pak with that game so its probably installed on most retro computers on the Brain drain lan event in sweden.
I think I compiled it for him, as I often do and then I forgot about the patch for almost 3 years 🤣
I would try a clean install if you have a mix of custom files, dll's, exe, pak files etc.
The patch is just a drop in replacement after you have installed quake with official glquake during the install, noting else is required other then Windows 98 as a minimum because if you compile under VS2005 it breaks windows 95 comparability, but the compiler builds faster code so its worth it.
I also never run 98 FE, only SE so I dont test if any of my patches work under FE so I tend to stick to 98 SE as a minimum requirement but I think anything compiled under VS2005 should work in 98FE.
But glquake can be a snowflake even with vanilla version on some systems, my Dual Athlon MP with a ATI 98000 PRO just hates it and corrupts the video output to hell and I never foudna work around on that system.
I think that system runs darkplaces instead.
