Hiya!

I am still kicking my self after all these years for losing the opportunity to buy the full version of Buerg Software's LIST , thinking I could always get it later and just like that some years passed until it became impossible to get since the author passed away... 🙁

I am making this thread in the hopes that we can create a list of software for dos/win3x/win that is still possible to buy/register today - before that stuff vanish into the annals of history... (kinda funny doing this in 2026 for 30+ years old software , probably should have made such an effort sooner but better late than never I guess 😉 )
Obviously I am not talking about old commecrial games for example that you can get from GOG or Steam , thinking more in the lines of small devs and shareware titles.

Here is the programs/games I know of:

1. Scorched Earth : you can still get a download which contains all the full versions of the game and the MTN builder by making a paypal donation

2. Total Commander (formerly known as Win Commander) : the keyfile you receive when registering will also work on the 16-bit version of the software for win3x

3. Mo'Slo Deluxe : you can still get the full version with a donation to a library organization (not sure how well this works, when I bought the software years ago their store front was working)

4. Dr. Hardware editions from 1994-2009 : the retro editions were added some years ago IIRC and it was possible to purchase, now the package is "coming soon" , maybe a direct email can arrange the sale?

5. Wiering Software games : games can be purchased on Steam and ITCH.IO

6. Scitech Display Doctor : DOS versions made freeware

That's all I can think of now, looking forward to your contributions!

I personally know a member here on VOGONS purchased Trumpet WinSock from Peter Tattam earlier this year.

very nice, it seems that there is a paypal purshase option here: https://www.tattsoft.com/index.php/sales
I assume the "Trumpet Winsock 3.0" refers to the win3x version that is 3.0d and 5.0 option for the win9x versions

you can still buy the "The Hugo Trilogy" and "The Nitemare-3D Trilogy" for 6$ each from the dev's website: https://www.dgray.com/ssmall.htm
the installers are 32bit windows ones but the content for both are 16bit windows and dos versions of the games

I'm not sure how much this would "count" - back in the day my company "Dunfield Development Services" made an sold a lot of DOS software. These were mostly embedded development tools (C compilers, Assembkers, Debuggers etc.) but also a lot of more general DOS tools/utilities.

Now that I've retired and closed the company, I've been working at making all of my former products(as well as some "Special purpose" and "Just for fun" tools that I created along the way) available as free software, including the (former proprietary source code) - all of which can be obtained from my site (below).

So... you can still get it legally, but you can't "buy" it or "register" it - formerly paid-for software, now free. No idea if this is any kind of thing you're looking for!

I would say everything similar counts - shareware made freeware by the authors included (just like the schitech display doctor releases)
thanks for also posting about it here!

Goldwave version 4.26 was their last version to fully support Windows 9x, but it is still available for download. I haven't tried installing it lately, but it probably uses the same licensing as the current version, so I would imagine that purchasing a license today will allow you to use the full version on Windows 9x. I'd check with them first before spending money on it though, just in case.

I purchased my license for that over 20 years ago and used the shareware version unlicensed since the late 90s before that.

Now for some blitting from the back buffer.

Some years ago, I ordered Operation: Inner Space, but I guess they still sell it.

It came in a DVD box with a floppy inside (another thread... is there any software still sold on floppies?), but it seems that you can only get the digital edition nowadays.

I have traveled across the universe and through the years to find Her.
Sometimes going all the way is just a start...

I'm selling some stuff!

thanks for this, and yes it seems to be using the same registration scheme so things work!

All of the Windows 95 games from XLMSoft can be bought for 14.95€ in a pack:

https://www.xlmsoft.de/spiele.php

Dr. Harrison was a big part of my childhood. It's fun.

thanks for the addition, do you know if these also have English language or they are German only?

this was also suggested on facebook, just checked it and you can still register it and get the win3x 16bit version of the game 😁

another suggestion was the AliveSoft DOS games: Billy The Kid Returns! , Scubaman’s Quest , Snow White’s Voyage , Animal Quest Dinosaur Predators , VGA Jigsaw , VGA Concentrate
you can still get them here: https://alivesoft.com/index.php/legacy-game-downloads/

I like the idea of the OP stuff, although vogons is not ideal to format text, maybe you can use :

  • BBCode list

or an monospaced text table ? Always better than those google list that are moved around or get forked and now you dont know where they are !
